Interesting..quite fussy in some parts, some parts, very meaty...

It's funny but I thought the same thing, Paul. There was no need to write those fast multi-note runs, which frankly were not typical or easy for a trombone, especially for the guy on base. As a result they were not played that tightly. But the overall chart was very swingin' for the most! It just did not need to be that fussy. I think one should bear in mind the KISS principal and also what Sammy Nestico said, "There is always the temptation of getting too busy, a pitfall that plagues every arranger". It applies to soloists also.

I do have some vintage Conn mouthpieces but I haven't yet learned to use them properly...

As to taking a break from le outre, I consider everything I do, be it gospel, Mexican, Balkan, Classical, or "other", to be equally outre. Playing jazz standards is a pretty outre proposition, in this day and age, no? Playing trombone is outre, compared to playing a drum machine!
But I wouldn't rule it out either. Look for a new record of a group called 40twenty in December, which is more of a swing-ding-a-ling affair.

I loved this video last year when BellEnd put it up - and the time before that actually. I have been visiting it every so often, ever since.

Quite by accident, I found a transcription of the arrangement that Quincy Jones did for this Basie performance - actually on one of those free, quite illegal I guess, websites. Guess which trombonist is going to be doing an 'Al Grey' at big band tonight?

Jacob, you are definitely a "Man for  all (brass) Seasons."  What an eclectic battery of trombones and other brass!  BTW, I have a Conn 24H, and it's great fun to play...I think maybe the old "pea-shooters" are getting popular again.
 
No doubt jazz standards are a little "outre" in this day and age, but they will never be "out of date," and neither will good trombone playing. IMHO, a fine jazz trombone interpretation of an iconic old standard has a certain something that is just about as pleasing as music gets.

I will look forward to your above mentioned record with great anticipation.  Keep up the outstanding work!

I'd never heard Ashley Alexander, with Wild Bill on Big Butter and Egg Man, here on Superbone, which sounds terrific despite the negative views I've seen here.  And died way too soon (egad, speaking personally).

Wow!  That's about as good as Dixieland gets.  That trombonist is terrific.  How does he decide whether to use the valves, the slide, or both.   Where would a trombonist go to learn how to play that instrument...I assume they are no longer made.

Yes! That's my kind of jazz! Wild Bill is just about my favourite trumpet (cornet actually) player of all time. I even got to play with him on a tune at an all-night jam session way back in the sixties in the UK.

Re the superbone, I was thinking that Ashley actually sounds slightly better using the slide than the valves but he was playing great trombone on this video cut and who cares what he is using. It is the style that is more important, not the bone he happens to be using.

BTW, it was not unusual for Eddie Condon and his style of music to use a valve trombone. Brad Gowens did this very successfully, mainly at Nicks, and in fact even invented the valide trombone, a hybrid slide-valve trombone which never caught on. I never saw a picture of it but I imagine it must have been something like a superbone.

I have always loved the Ashley Alexander played.I believe his superbone was very customized.I can't recall who was working with him on it.The intent was to make a good idea (the superbone) a real player,without the flaws.If you have ever played a superbone they have their drawbacks.

I have heard the Superbone described this way: "It combines a bad slide with a bad valve section"

Never played one before. I know the potential for creativity is limitless with one. I should ask his son Dave if his dad's model was customized or not. I am pretty sure he still has it, among his dad's other gear - and many cars - that he inherited. Also in that collection are 2 or three double bell Euphoniums.
