yep yep.  i commented on that clip.  someone had a problem with branford's take on the trombone which isn't even contained within the excerpt.  here's the deal: lighten up cats.

carl's secret to my ears is that he understands the bop language and is able to use it effectively, even on a funky one chord vamp.  that's the essence of his playing that i think really excites most trombonist fans.  there is a logical compositional approach to his solo statement that sits in the tradition of his peers.  unfortunately, those who have not studied/lived the language as carl did, miss out on much of the harmonic story that he presents and instead latch onto the physical way that he played the instrument.

most folks that i hear nowadays who attempt to channel carl do so in a manner that reminds me of imitating a foreign language by taking on the physical body language and the basic sounds of the language without learning any of the vocabulary....or perhaps one might know a few words in the language, but doesn't know what those words mean or how to connect them together to communicate a thought.  this is just as obvious as the singers we all hear who "love stevie wonder" but show it by throwing melisma all over everything they sing until you can't hear the melody. (see the national anthem sung at an nba game)

most of the students i have encountered throughout the years have been unwilling to "really" transcribe solos and to match the rhythm and melodic language of the solos against the harmony of the song and attempt to understand the thoughts and motives of carl, or any other player they may be transcribing.  they, and i at times in my life, have been satisfied with doing an "impression" of their favorite player that relies heavily on a couple of catch phrases and the attitude of the player.  there is so much more to it.

one could watch a foreign film without subtitles and still get much of the basic story, but there are so many more layers of interest.  so it is with jazz music, too.

Slide.

Too bad the sound isn't too good, and he gets drowned out by the band.  It also kinda sucks that the audio is off the video by a second or two.

But, it's Slide. Maybe the earliest video I've seen of him

I haven't seen the original yet, but the one with ESP is smoking. Not really high and fiddly ( Image), more like mid-range and fiddly. I always wondered how Alan wrote those call and response bits between you and the band, and now I see, after hearing this version and the studio version, that the band just has to LISTEN to what you play and copy it. Wild stuff!

Sorry, I didn't find the thread for posting cool trombone videos, but still, this deserves it's own thread:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=St4kUjPzozo&feature=related

What makes this video so cool:

it's authentic
Setup is p, bs, 2 perc + 5 tenor trombones (including Steve Turre) playing close harmony
it took me six or seven times to figure out were the 1 in the intro is (once you know it, it's pretty easy  Image )
it definitely puts you in a good mood

ctingle:
This is great video of some of the best NYC based latin musicians I know of playing a burning merengue standard that I wish I could name, and I'll copy this over to the youtube thread with the hope that others will fill in more info.

Manny Oquendo's Conjunto Libre
Manny on timbales
Jerry Gonzales on conguas
Andy Gonzales on bajo/bass
? pianist ?

Bones L to R
Jimmy Bosch (solo too)
Steve Turre
Dan Regan
Papo Vasquez
? I wish I knew ?

Herman Olivera vocals
? other vocalists ?

Craig/unaboner:
Manny Oquendo y Cojunto Libre!!

That is Jimmy Bosch, Steve Turre, Dan Regan, Papo Vasquez, and Lenny Pollara on Trombones. Also notable Andy Gonzalez on Bass and his trumpet playing brother, Jerry, on congas.

Killin', killin' band!!
