Talk about "one mans meat is another mans poison"

I checked out a few of these videos, loved some and thought some of the others pure drivel. It never ceases to amaze me how peoples taste can be so different. It's an irrelevance which ones I liked and didn't like. My opinion is just as valid or wrong as the next persons!!

I will say this though, I don't see enough players serving the music. You have to get your ego out of mix. A lot of what I see is just players waiting for their turn to jump in and do their stuff irrespective of how it fits the groove and genre. I like the quote I heard from a friend a few months ago when describing a very technically adept trombonist, "Isn't it a shame he doesn't use his super powers for good" !!!!! Image

Quote from: Graham Martin on Apr 18, 2011, 06:22PMI have often joked on this forum that it took me 40 years to eliminate the Chris Barber influence from my playing. Chris had a hugely popular traditional jazz (and blues) band in the UK from the 1950s to the present day. After listening to some of these videos of his new big band from 2011 in their tribute to Duke Ellington, I am not so sure that I was right about eliminating that influence - I never could anyway. Image

The solos by Chris and Bob Hunt on this video of "Black And Tan Fantasy/The Mooche are excellent. Chris Barber's solo is quite close to the original:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKufyz-21_4

And I am jealous as hell about that band because I tried to do the same thing by forming a Cotton Club type band last year. I have not given up entirely on that project but we are presently taking 5 on it.

The trumpet player 'Magic' Mike Henry, from memory, is a mate of Christine's and has played with her band.

BTW, Chris Barber has just turned 81 years young!

Mike is a very old friend of mine (we were at college together) and it is great to see and hear him having fun  Image

Out of curiosity, how much rehearsal did you have with the accompanist? You seem to be in great sync with one another.

Ahh that's music for me.  Image Nice both songs and nice solos on route 66. Should believe so many deep voices would make it a bit "grey" but it was clear and very nice sound. But of course both the lead trombone and lead song goes very high up. Very nice to listen!

I don't really understand why it is only the 45th anniversary of the 100 Club. It was a jazz club long before 1966; way back to 1942, in fact. Maybe that is when it was first called the 100 Club. Before that we just called it 100 Oxford Street (Mack's) and of course it was the home of Humphrey Lyttelton. Those were the days!

Image
I lost interest in it when it went rock - punk rock, at that. Image Come to think of it, that's probably what the 45 year anniversary is all about. 45 years of destroying the best jazz club in London.

Grah,
that's because it isn't the anniversary of the club.

It was the 45th Anniversary of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra!!!!
The band you see here is the Alumni band which really is a "spot the British star musician"
All the guys that dominate the London scene right now!!!

BTW the 100 club is still thriving as a Jazz club.......  Image

Hadn't heard of this guy before, and his book isn't exactly my cup of tea after checking out some other videos, but he's got a good sense of humor, so more power to him. It was enjoyable in a Spyrogyra-meets-Brecker Brothers kind of way. (Spyrogyra? Anyone? Too old a reference? Are they still gigging?) Nice black 2B, also.

I try very hard to listen to popular music of today but I can only say I agree with that last response to the video. It's a shame really but, with the recent popularity of Michael Buble, I guess there is some hope for the newer audiences, iPoders, whatever.

Michael Buble hires musicians. A lot of 'em. A lot of the time. Nothing wrong with that. I wish he'd hire me. Glenn Miller was pop.

He's amazing.  There was another young Hungarian trombonist with that kind of facility, who used to come to the ITF but I never got his name.  Haven't seen him for several years.  How does anybody play tenor with that facility in the trigger and pedal ranges?  No embouchure shifts or issues of any kind - it's fantastic.

Doug one little stupid question, a little aside the topic. This young player do things that seem impossible even for most bass trombonist. Is it so that people like him have a natural gift in his face to make the trombone a natural part of him? Is this possible to work out for people that don't have it? (not me....hehe... but young people) This guy remind me of another player I did study with. He did play mostly jazz and could do unbelievable things on his King 3b. He did play F pedals that did scare me. And believe me with good nice sound to. The strange thing he could do everything like going into or out of any register, with the same ease like this player.  Staccato, dynamic whatever. It was like the horn was born in his lips. I believe some is born with something that makes this possible? It have to be?
