Valve trombone measurements PLEASE!

Post by greenbean »

Hey, valve trombonists! (3-valve instrument; no handslide)

Can you help me out and measure the length of your bell section and your valve section?

I am primarily intersted in King and Conn valve trombones but other makers are good, too. THANKS! :good:

Note that King 2B and 3B valve sections fit on their respective bells so you can use them as slide or valve trombones.

I believe the Conn 5G and 6H have a similar relationship.

Bruce is correct about the 5G and 6H. The 5G valve section also fits and works well on the 48H.

The King 2B and 3B valve sections differ solely in the tenon.

The Bach V16 valve section fits on any of the Bach small bore bells: 12, 16, 34, and 36. It doesn't work too well on the 36 (personal opinion).

Does this mean if I can get a 2B slide it will fit my 2B valve ‘bone?

Hi greenbean,

I have a Blessing Artist valve trombone I can measure for you if that would be of use?

Is it the length of the tubes you're after or overall length for case fitting etc?

My vintage Coursnon definitely has a different bell section than its slide counterparts.

Bell: 25”
Valve section: 32”

Happy to measure more precisely if you have specific points of reference you have in mind.

Cheers

As well as a Cleveland 605 (which are very inexpensive relative to the “full blown” 2B).

Cheers

My Getzen is the same. It came in a big heavy case that holds a slide and a valve section.

Thanks to all of you. I have made several custom cases for somewhat unusal valve trombones. But would like to make a bag that fits "standard" American-style valve bones. By that, I mean the King, Conn, and Bach models.

And, as pointed out above, all the pro models from these makers have regular bell sections - 6H, 3B, 16, etc that can make the horn much more versatile. I know that Bach had an intermediate model that has a bell section w/o a tuning slide and (maybe) not the usual length (not sure).

Yes, please. I am after the overall dimensions. Mostly of the valve section. Length and perhaps width at the widest part? (Bottom of valve casing up to a finger button. I think I know the answer but more data won't hurt!)

Thank you!

Burgerbob, thanks for the 2B slide/valve interchange clarification.

No problem!

Measurements are:

Valve section:
  • Length: 30"
  • Height: 6.5" (base of valves to finger buttons)
  • Width: 3" (leftmost point to rightmost point - it's not actually 3" wide at any given point)
Bell section:
  • Length: 27.5" (tuning slide all the way in)
  • Bell diameter: 8"
  • Height: 10" (receiver to top of bell)
Hope that helps.
