Conn 30H for swing?

Post by demaxx1 »

Hi Guys and Gals, Our local band plays swing during the spring. Last year I played my 78H, which did well. Here is the but, it was just a little darker than I wanted and if I pushed it to brighten it up it didn't. I did use it for a Christmas concert solo and it was great.

Back to my original question! My 30H is a dual bore and it falls right between a King 2B and 3B. in my little music room all my small bore horns sound the same.

Has anyone out there used a 30H for swing music?

Thanks

Oh, yeah, a 30h is a great horn, especially for swing. It will be darker than the 2b for sure. If you're comfortable with the 2B size and the Conn sound, 30h is a great horn. The sound will be dark for the size, but the punch/articulation will feel like the smaller bore horn. I think you'll have to work less to be heard on the 30 than the 78.

I've got a 32h, and I've owned a 30h, love the sound on both. The only thing I didn't like on the 30 was the narrow slide, but that's gonna be the case on most small bore horns.

Well, swing was the popular music when the 30H came out in the 1930s.
