Nils Landgren

Post by PaulT »

What kind of trombone does Nils Landgren play? I know (or think I know) that it is a dual bore Yamaha. What size bores? History/development of the horn?

(I have become very fond of Yamaha's Nils Landgren mouthpiece, which has led to listening to Landgren on Youtube.)

All I know is that he plays a red trombone!

I've played it ;-) It's a fantastic horn and I remember he told me it was a dual bore .500/.525 with a 7.5 bell.

Hope this helps :-)

Thanks for this first-hand info. Are there, besides the specs, similarities to a Conn 32H?

No, not at all.
Well not to the one 32H I've tried anyway.

Yamaha were going to produce a Nils Landgren Model and you could have chosen the Red or just had it "Normal." I'm not sure they released it in the end. Haven't seen any news anywhere so I guess it didn't make full production.
Shame cos it blew great, but then again maybe Nils put all the notes on it ;-)

I’d heard it was an 8” bell. Very interesting to hear that it’s 7.5. That explains a lot about his sound to me.

It’s not my ears, it’s my experience! I play a Landgren on a Yamaha .508 with an 8” bell, and I played it for a time on a .500/.525 Yamaha with an 8” bell. I never understood how Landgren himself could blow that setup with that much focus as quietly as he does. I figured it was his killer chops. But knowing the bell is a little smaller helps jive that sound with my experience.
