Holton 89?

Post by Kevbach33 »

Yesterday I picked up a Holton 168, about 1962 based on serial number, from a local music store. Included were original paperwork and 2 mouthpieces.

The mouthpiece in question has piqued my intrigue. It's funnel shaped, stamped Frank Holton & Co. Elkhorn, Wis. (all caps) with 89 stamped opposite. and is significantly larger in cup diameter than a 6 1/2AL, with a more narrow, flatter rim but a rounded bite. The throat and depth are pretty similar. It's somewhat longer than modern large shank pieces. I'm guessing this piece came with the horn from the beginning.

I'm not too fond of the rim shape; I feel that I need a more secure interface so I'll be looking for a new mouthpiece in the meantime.

What do the Holton folks know about these mouthpieces? And what would it compare closest to? (I don't have a micrometer handy to better answer this question.) I'm also not nearly as familiar with large tenor sizes as I am bass and small tenor options.

P.S. The other mouthpiece is a run of the mill Conn 3B, not of the Connstellation variety, for those wondering. It will go to my former high school, which has a 71H.
