Stomvi Comby System

Post by stewbones43 »

Hi folks,
I recently bought from Ebay a size 4 Stomvi Comby System mouthpiece set
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stomvi-Tromb ... true&rt=nc
It consists of a gold plated rim about the same size as a Bach or Wick 4.5, 5 different depth gold plated cup inserts, a silver plated cup body and 2 silver plated shanks-1 large and 1 small.
As yet I haven't had much chance to play on it and all group sessions are cancelled now so all I will be able to do is loads of home practise. I wondered if anyone here had any experiences with this mouthpiece set up and could share their thoughts.

Cheers

Trent's Stomvi trumpet set review:
I tried to find the link suggested by Bruce but was unsuccessful; the youtube link from Posaunus shows a simplified Chinese? copy of the trumpet version which is not manufactured to acceptable tolerances so it leaks! The price comparison is as expected; Chinese version less that $20, the Stomvi trumpet version over $300, the Stomvi trombone version nearer $500.
$500 for a mouthpiece sounds a lot but it is actually $500 for 10 trombone mouthpieces-All use the size 4 rim but there are 5 different cup depths and either a large shank or a small shank. So 10 different mouthpieces at $50 each is looking a lot more reasonable! How many of the 10 I will use remains to be seen!
I will report back when I have had some face time on them. Coronavirus is presenting the over 70s with lots of practice time.

Cheers

Sorry to be a bit late to reply...

I used a Stomvi combi mpc for year... My combination was a 7 size rim paired with a B cup on a large shank.
It suited me quite well with a King 4B.
Wat I can say of it is that those mouthpieces (I also bought a size 3 later on) are very open and freeflowing.

I later developped an airy sound with it, after switching from time to time to bass trombone.

Thing is, as my embouchure developped on the bass, I wasn't able to stay on 7 or 6.5 size mpc...

For me, they are underrated mpc, that could be the ONE for some people...

Especially for people who could benefit from small rims on large bore bones, or the reverse...

Cheers!

Here, at last, is a promised report on the Stomvi Comby System mouthpiece.

On the plus side, Covid did allow me to do lots of practice at home and I used the Stomvi a lot. I originally tried all the combinations but soon settled on the large shank and the shallowest E cup and used it with my 88H for playing works such as the Gordon Jacob Concerto, the Grondahl, the David Concertino and the Malcolm Arnold Fantasy, all works with quite a wide range above and below the usual tessitura.

I find the mouthpiece very comfortable and like the full sound it produces.

The down side is that I have a set of mouthpiece parts which potentially give me 10 different mouthpieces but I am only using one so I have a box of expensive bits and pieces which I am not using.

The other strange thing is that the system works fine on my 88H but not as well on my Yamaha YSL-641; the notes are not as secure. It works fine with the small shank on my 74H and my Besson 10-10.

I think my advice would be, if you know what size you want, the Doug Elliott system is just as good but less expensive and still allows some degree of changeability.

The Stomvi Comby System is a good mouthpiece set but very expensive if you don't use all of it. I was lucky that mine came up on Ebay and it was a size that suited me, at a price that suited me and nobody else was bidding!!!

Cheers

For those who require a lot of customization in their mouthpieces (Cup I.D., Cup Depth, Throat Diameter), the more accessible choices are Doug Elliott (well-known to TromboneChatters) and Josef Klier (made in Germany; not so widely known). The Klier menu is quite comprehensive - you can probably get what you want - and the mouthpieces are very high quality. More trombonists should check them out.
