bass trombone large mouthpieces comparison

Post by momentum »

Hi,

I've been playing a Schilke 60 recently and I generally like it but I want to try something slightly larger -- in particular with respect to cup size/depth, if that's possible, as I think in comparison to my other pieces what I am liking about the way it plays is a result of the deeper cup. It is easy to find specs on rims and throats, but not on cup size...

Given coronavirus lockdowns and my present location, and my lack of desire to pay international shipping & customs fees, I am limited to the EU market.

It seems the options I can find are:
-Rath B1 MF
-Griego 0.25
-Joseph Klier PO3
-Marcinkiewicz CH 105 (& 106/107 but I think that would be overkill)
-Bruno Tilz Modell Daum (largest size specs are 29mm/8mm, comparable to Schilke 60, not sure about its cup)

Does anyone have experience playing on these pieces, and have any thoughts on how they stack up against a Schilke 60?

Very thank you!

I would try the Griego .25. Better in every area than the Schilke. BUT...it is a small change on paper going to this size, quite different in the real world of actual performance and practice. That said, you may also find what you are looking for in just trying an equivalent modern size, say the Griego .5.

Seriously consider a Doug Elliott. He can hook you up with exactly what you want. He can even keep the Schilke 60 sized rim but give you a larger cup and/or shank.

Out of those choices, definitely the Griego. Obviously there are many more when you have full access.

I have the 105 and 107. The shanks are a little bigger than a regular bass shank. I found them too big for my King 7B but they work great (and fit properly) in my 1892 Conn Eb tuba.

I am playing the Marc 105. Works great! Three of my bass trombonist friends here in Richmond have switched to the Marc 105 all with great success. The horns used are:

Sincerest thanks to all for your input. Probably will go with Griego 0.25 and we'll see how it goes...
