Yamaha Peter Sullivan Model LS Mouthpiece

Post by BrianJohnston »

Hi all,

Curious about the specs of the Peter Sullivan model mouthpiece. Not much info is given on it, and i've heard mixed ideas of what it's closest too. Basically it seems to be a 4.5G with a slightly deeper than average cup, and a slightly larger throat. Does this sound about right, or am I quite a bit off?

Thanks.

From the Yamaha specifications
Yamaha Peter Sullivan: Cup I.D. 25.42mm / 1.001"; Throat: 7.16mm / 0.282"; Semi-deep cup
"Offers rich orchestral sound with a powerful projection. Rim & cup fairly large for comfortable fortissimo, yet also fine control. Designed by Pittsburgh Symphony principal trombonist Peter Sullivan."

In other words, the rim is just a touch larger than a 6½AL, but the throat is larger and the cup is bigger and deeper. Perhaps more like a Schilke 51? It's a nice mouthpiece.

I would say it's nothing like a 51.

Is there something you'd compare it to?

Before Pete was with Yamaha, he told me his custom mouthpiece at the time was based on a Wick 5 rim and a 6B cup. Don't know if that influenced the Yamaha mouthpiece or not, but that's what he played back in the 90s.

Nowadays, Pete mainly uses a GB custom light weight mouthpiece with a slight larger than 5G rim and a GSD cup, and sometimes uses a Yamaha custom mouthpiece for Mahler… But that custom piece has a larger rim and cup than the one in the market… He said Yamaha Peter Sullivan model is a terrible copy of his mouthpiece he sent to Yamaha in 1990s…Yamaha made everything too small…
