Standard Series
• 51: A large bowl shaped cup producing a rich tone quality. Ideally suited for large bore tenor and orchestral performers. 1.010" Cup I.D.; 0.277" Throat; "J" Backbore.

Symphony Series
Based on our standard trombone mouthpiece models, the Symphony Series Tenor Trombone and Bass Trombone models have modified rim contours, cup shapes, throats and backbores creating a responsive balance in resistance and blowing freedom along with attack clarity that will appeal to the contemporary trombonist. Schilke Symphony Series mouthpieces continue a tradition in outstanding Schilke workmanship combining old world craftsmanship with the demands of the modern brass player.

M5.1: A Medium Shallow Cup that provides more brilliance, and projection due to additional high overtones in the sound core.

D5.1: A Standard cup shape that provides a deeper bottom to the sound core and excellent articulation clarity. Resistance variables are ideal for a principal player.

D5.1*: For a more open feel with additional depth to the sound and greater flexibility, the Standard Cup with tapered throat provides slightly less resistance than the “D” model.

All have 0.281" Throat with a "K" Backbore.

Any info on the K backbore vs. J? It looks like it's slightly wider?

First impressions: the 5.1 is a better 51.

Looks like it. If I am correct, the Symphony series was designed by Karl Hammond when he was working at Schilke. His mouthpieces tend to have a more open backbore than the "classic designs" like the 51.

If someone likes the 51 they may like the D5.1 or D5.1* even better. Rim feels the same, differences are subtle. D5.2's have a tiny bit larger inner rim diameter and are also very good.
