Christmas CDs

It has been a few years since I have added to my Christmas music library. I am interested in trombone and brass ensembles, of any style, jazz, big band.

I also have some recorder & various native flute recordings that are very enjoyable.

I would like to add a few CDs this year.

What do you folks listen to?

Any suggestions are most welcomed.

It’s not new, but Carla Bley has a Christmas album called “Carla’s Christmas Carols” featuring herself and Steve Swallow with a brass quintet. Cool arrangements!

Another older one, but some really nice arrangements that are a little different. Jazz combo.

Bill Reichenbach's Trombone's LA Christmas CD is pretty great!
Listened to both CDs while writing Christmas cards to family and friends this afternoon. I can't recommend this music highly enough. Arranged and conducted by Bill Reichenbach, the ensemble playing (by a hoard of the best trombonists in the Los Angeles area) is beyond superb. Every TromboneChatnik should own this collection.

Better yet, all the proceeds go to the "Hearts of Music" fund (founded by the Reichenbachs), which supports under-insured musicians and their families experiencing health-related needs. Couldn't go to a better cause. Order a copy of the CDs. Make a donation. :clever:

Not a CD... But certainly the only music that captures the spirit of the holiday...

"The only bells that ring there are the clanging chimes of doom"

"Oh tonight thank God it's them, instead of you"

"Where nothing ever grows, no rain or rivers flow"

"Do they know it's Christmas time at all"

OK -the tree is up and decorated, so the CD's came out tonight: (* for favorites - others still worthwhile)

Trombones Under the Tree* (some of the best trombone playing you'll ever hear, w/good arrangements too)
The Hollywood Trombones*
Spiritual to the Bone - Christmas Edition
Carols from the Bells - Trombones LA*
Canadian Brass - The Christmas Album (they have several xmas CD's)
A Festival of Carols - Philadelphia Brass Ensemble* (historical - like the Gabrieli w/Chicago/Cleveland)
Joy to the World - Empire Brass* (they have other xmas CD's - this is the best)
Merry Christmas w/the Dallas Brass
The Spirit of Brass - Pittsburgh Symphony Brass
Christmas with the Solid Brass
A Brass & Organ Christmas - Bay Brass* (classy playing by a group from the SF Symphony,Opera & Ballet)
Christmas with the London Brass* (successor group to Philip Jones)
Christmas Fantasy - Black Dyke Mills Band* (with choir as well -brass band at it's best)
Chicago 25* (there are other xmas CD's from the group-this one was first) worth it for Jimmy Pankow's solo on Have Yourself a Merry Christmas!

I have other recordings, but most wouldn't fit the "Trombone content" criteria

Enjoy!

Great input folks.

Jim, I am interested in all Christmas music. Trombone & brass emphasis for sure but all high quality music is of interest.

Keep it coming!

Trombonist/arranger Ted Blumenthal's arrangements for big band, Adventures in Jazz Orchestra Celebrates Christmas

https://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Jazz- ... 734&sr=8-1

There are some rough edges from time constraints, but Ted's arrangements are terrific, like "We Three Kings" in 11/4.

The section was Bruce Bonvissuto, Scott Whitfield and myself. Ted plays trombone on a few selections also.

Looks like the whole album is on YouTube:
