It keeps changing key as shown on our Play Order sheet:

Midnight In Moscow – Play Order
CHORUS A (24 Bars): Key Cm - Soprano and Trombone play melody in
Unison. Clarinet plays Dixie fills.
CHORUS B (24 Bars): Key Cm - Melody Dixie Ensemble with Soprano lead
CHORUS C (24 Bars): Key Cm - Band Plays Stop Chords on Bars 1 & 2 and
Bars 5 & 6. Soprano plays breaks across these bars.
Rest of Chorus is Melody Dixie Ensemble with
Soprano lead. Make sure to play the correct chord
transition in the last two bars.
CHORUS D (24 Bars): Key Dm - Trombone plays melody with Clarinet
playing fills behind.
The last two bars are a break with the Trombone
playing an upward sliding note to cover the
transition to Fm.
CHORUS E (26 Bars): Key Fm - Melody Dixie Ensemble with Soprano lead.
Hold the last note for an extra two bars. Trombone will play a concluding phrase same as Kenny Ball
version.

Note: For a normal front line, substitute 'Trumpet' where it shows 'Soprano'.

I get to play the melody in Dm as per John Bennet on the recording. I have a Band-in-a-Box file or lead sheet if it would help.

(Transcribing jazz solos is fraught with difficulties because exact rhythmic notation is well-nigh impossible. So listen carefully because it's the only way to learn how to play jazz trombone so that we can return to the Golden Age.) 8-)

I’ve been asked to play this at a celebration of life (the deceased, a friend’s father, was a lifelong trombone player). His daughter will play piano. She says she plays it in Fm. The Ball version is in Cm (I think). The Django version is in Dm. I found another version in Am.

No rehearsal.

The Kenny Ball version is the one that I was referring to, which changes key from Cm to Dm to Fm. As a matter of fact I have recently been playing pretty much a Kenny Ball copy with two different new bands. The Play order I posted is what we use with The Swing Time Stompers and the new Redland City Band Dixielanders. We played it last month at the Swing Time Binary Music Club and it was very popular with our audience. Not surprising because all Kenny Ball tunes go down well with an older audience.

Fm key would probably be best for a trombone on its own.

I have lead sheets for all three keys.

Sorry, but I'm not used to sending emails on this forum. Did you get my email with the lead sheet?
