Trombone Chat server?

Post by robcat2075 »

Is the server that Trombone Chat operates from a regular commercial "cloud" kind of thing or is it an actual physical server in one of the forum mod's basement?

Digital Ocean is more of a rent-a-server, but they promote their services as cloud services. The advantage over basement servers is that there is generally better maintenance and backup.

Interesting.

I ask because when i press a button on this forum I often feel like I'm waiting for someone's hard drive to spin back up before anything happens. :D

I find the response can vary, probably depending on how many others are on line. Late night I have little problem (not surprising, most of our members are based in the US). During the day I deal with a combination of heavy DSL load from my local ISP and traffic on TC.

It is hosted via Digital Ocean and I pay the monthly bill. Should work well.

Thank you very much for paying for it! It is a wonderful service.

The delays i notice are unlike any other forum i visit so I figure it must be something peculiar to this forum rather than limited to my internet service.

I've noticed the same issue. Sometimes it's fine, sometimes it takes 15 seconds to get any response, totally independent of my connection.

Thankfully this has a pretty low impact on something like a trombone forum :)

Can we donate to the operating costs at least? Doesn’t seem fair for one person to fund this.

I've considered many times adding a donation button but haven't. More importantly is that the moderators here have helped build the infrastructure and continue to keep things on the up-and-up without any money and rarely a thank you. So thanks to them!

The delays could be a lot of things. Could be other software running on the physical server, could be connection traffic, could be DNS or dynamic IP updates on your end.

It's always pretty fast on my end. Works fine.

that is fabulous that it works well for everyone.

But, again, just now I pressed "submit" on a reply to a topic and nothing... nothing... nothing... nothing...

I clicked back to the forum to see if perhaps just my reply page had not updated but, no, it was as if i had never made any reply at all. Gone. :D

It is a behavior peculiar to this one forum.

I've had that happen to me on the old Trombone Forum and also even on the OTJ Forum. It's probably a function of local internet traffic as much as traffic on the TC server.

Often if I've typed a long reply I'll save it to the Clipboard before submitting just in case it gets "lost".

Sometimes if you hit the Back button or try to reply to the same post, your browser will remember your text, or give you the option to recall a cached version of it. Sometimes you get lucky like that, not always.

:good:

Since it's happened to me a couple of times (perhaps my fault?), if I'm writing a long post (my apologies for often being so wordy), I'll sometimes write it in Word (easier to edit, too) and then paste into TromboneChat.
