Holy heck, the bass trombonist in the Romeo and Juliet is blasting off the roof of that place. If Gergiev asked for, I guess...

At the risk of making it all about Romeo and Juliet...

Since this must be the half-speed rehearsal, I wonder how the concert went...  Image

My favorite Mahler 7 moment starts at about 20:00 in that performance:

Norman Bolters tenor horn playing is also amazing on the BSO recording.

Well, I know it was live, but maybe the NYP made at least an archival recording (so maybe that will count?)........ Image

New York Philharmonic's concert staging of Das Rheingold this past weekend (final performance is tomorrow night, BTW)

Just wow......

From the Brass Band of Battle Creek performing the Shostokovich Scherzo:

Especially 2:17, and the look the conductor gives the trombones after that lick, at 2:42  Image

When I listened to this click on my phone speakers it was all bass trombone. Then I put on my Grado Labs SR80 headphones and the overall amazing quality of this recording became very apparent. Still a LOT of bass trombone but the low end underneath it was just wonderful. The fidelity on this is great but it still sounds like an orchestra in a room. Eve

Oooooo! Aaaaaa!

Of course, talking about that BBoBC/Shostokovich performance, if we're talking about Charlie Vernon that's quite another game.  Image

Aaaaand, of course the Chicago Symphony performance of Pines Of Rome recorded for Fantasia 2000 is certainly of note here.

Yeah, I listen to this from time to time.  Best part is when the contras are whipped out!

NY Phil low brass demolishing the orchestra in Tannhauser. Much slower than the CSO recording, too. The last chord is pretty glorious.

13:50 mark-

Also, NY Phil low brass demolishing the orchestra in 1812 at the 1:50 mark. The scale at 2:11 is literally unbelievable.  Image

Jumping back to the first post, at 1:05 of the Romeo and Juliet you see the trombone section. Is the bass trombone a Duo Gravis or is there another bass with the narrow D pipe extension like my DG?

My mistake, my D pipe is lower in relation to the tuning crook.
Sorry about the digression from the topic.

After listening to the examples, I opened up more at rehearsal tonight. I think with a good sound.

A bit off topic here, but Grado makes fantastic headphones.  I have a pair of SR60s that have definitely been a good introduction to the world of audiophile equipment.

A bit more on-topic:

This has probably been shared several times here, but I feel that it's appropriate for this thread, certainly for a powerhouse trombone ensemble recording, anyway.  Layla from the London Trombone Sound album.  This is what introduced me to what a trombone ensemble should sound like.
