Reinhardt System Explainer

Post by VJOFan »

Came across this today. I don’t know enough to know if it’s as good as it seems. It does seem really good for anyone who wants to get a primer on the pivot system. I certainly understand the terminology much better now and get what people are talking about a bit better. Is this a good representation of best Reinhardt practice?

It’s been a couple of years since I watched it. I did a short write up on my blog about it. Libman does describe some things differently from how I prefer to think of things, some of which might be explained by when he studied with Reinhardt. Reinhardt did alter his ideas as he learned more and I think Libman’s discussion is based on earlier ideas.

Overall it is a very clear and easy to follow description. It was almost like the interviewers pushed Mr. Libman into describing horn angle motion. When he starts into his discussion of the term pivot, he is very much in the camp of the term not being very apt. He also describes that embouchure/mouthpiece motion of up and down at an angle across the face rather than a flag waving of the bell.

Glad it's not junk, if not quite perfect.
