Must have books

Post by Pauly »

I have some Amazon gift cards from the holidays. I'm wondering if there are any must have books I should be looking at?

I’m a fan of Blume’s 36 studies for trombone with F att if you mean trombone or music-oriented books.

Thanks for the recommendation.

If you teach, Reginald Fink's "Trombonist's Handbook" has great information for helping students (and good info for us plain folk too).

If you are interested in bass trombone, there are some good books by Eliezer Aharoni.

A complex theme with rich undertones and some dissonance. May require some repetition to master it.

For best results, combine its study with Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land."

But seriously (rim shot!) ... I'm partial to Tommy Pederson's books if you're into bass trombone.

It depends on your age, your experience, and your plans. For college, Bordogni/Rochut, Kopprasch, and Blazevich are essential. It’s different for jazz, though. However, if you’re planning to work in music history, Trevor Herbert’s The Trombone is essential, and TC member Howard Weiner is editor of a new book on trombone history.

If one plays a trombone with an F trigger, then let's not forget to mention Brad Edwards' "Lip Slur" book! It takes up where Matty Shiner's "Lip Builder" book leaves off and is extremely well worked out. But again, one needs an F trigger trombone to play well from it. It's doable on bass trombone as well as tenor, but I believe it was written with tenor uppermost in mind. The feel of the melodies is Borgdogni-ish! Love it!
