Internet newsgroups

Post by timothy42b »

I've been occasionally reading internet newsgroups since the old days of rn and nn, and text edit via vi. There's a lot of garbage but also surprising experts out there.

Google groups dropped access this February. Anybody here have a recommendation for an alternate?

When I used to use USENET in the '90s, I accessed through a newsgroup server using a newsgroup reader (https://www.newsgroupreviews.com/newsgroup-readers.html). You can use an email app like Mozilla Thunderbird to access the server, but you have to find a server. Tom's Guide lists some newsgroup servers https://www.tomsguide.com/best-picks/th ... -providers

Those people take an odd pride in using outdated techniques. On the other hand, the dedicated reader apps are usually pretty sophisticated. You can assign rules to read articles or ignore certain users or download attachments. Retrogrouch central to be sure. Early on when I was using it, I had to dial in to a server. So it wasn't even part of the "internet" at that point

I eventually abandoned USENET for better curated and easier to use web-based forums. USENET was the wild-wild-west before the WorldWideWeb. One that I read frequently got mean and nasty. People spent a lot of time trying to get each other's internet service providers to block them. These were the original trolls.
