Hammond Bass Depth Comparison
What would the different cup depths on the Hammond bass mouthpieces compare to? I can find info on the rim sizes, but not the cups themselves. I know some people have described the BL as shallow or bright, but that's really all. I'm currently using a Schilke 58 if that helps.

Re: Hammond Bass Depth Comparison
BL is still pretty deep on the 20 size. My 19BL got really shouty, the 20BL less so.
The BXL depth is silly deep, borderline useless.
I know Matt Walker has some customs in BLL, between the two.
I personally am not sure I dig the Hammonds- the throat is so big that it just doesn't really jive for me on any of my horns.

Re: Hammond Bass Depth Comparison
The only horn my 20BL seems to work well in is the YBL-820G Doug Yeo, which was developed using his mouthpiece, which I also find to be a cave. Even with that I honestly like playing it with the Markey 87 better. Probably should just sell it at this point, as I don't think I'm ever going to put it to any real use.Burgerbob wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2025 11:55 pm BL is still pretty deep on the 20 size. Re: Hammond Bass Depth Comparison
The Hammond 20BL feels shallower to the touch than a Stork 1.25, which is measured on Stork's website at 36.8mm. Like Aidan said its a very wide throat so it feels bigger than it probably is. I play tested both the BL and the BXL cups and found the BL better suited to punchier commercial settings and the BXL to a richer orchestral sound. Both cups utilize the same throat and I've recently moved away from the Hammond's because of how large the throat is, but I know some people love a more open feel.
