Cleveland Orchestra Trombone Section

As far as I’m able to tell the whole trombone section is now on Bach trombones, (unless Shachar is still on an Edwards). This isn’t much of a surprise since I believe the entire trumpet section is on Bachs and Rick Stout (2nd trombone) has been on a MV Bach for a while. Brian Wendel (principal) won the job on an Edwards and then switched to a corp Bach 42. Luke Sieve (bass) won the job on a shires and now I believe is on a Bach 50. Does anyone know if Luke got his hands on a vintage Bach?

Luke’s bass is an Elkhart Corporation Bach 50.

Shachar is on a stock 42B, yes. Luke is not on a stock 50. David Rejano also played a stock 42BG at LA Phil until he got his Shires. I've played it, it's just about a perfect orchestral .547. Some of them are like that.

Websites don’t get updated that often - I think he was playing a Shires for a while. He has likely changed again. It happens.

Rick used to play a MV with an earlyish Thayer. These days he plays a Corp 42B with a stock closed wrap valve. He got it at a thrift store a few years back.

(As of the end of the CIM semester)
-Brian Wendel has the Bach Corp 42b.
-Shachar Israel plays on a Bach 42B bell with instrument innovation rotor valve, custom built wrap by Stan Matras.
-Rick Stout is still on his MW/42, primarily Thayer but I have seen him go back and forth with rotor.
-Luke Sieve is on a Bach/Shires (Bach corp 50 bell with his current Shires axials).

It's such a wild part about Bachs. Someone's got a great Mount Vernon Bach and gets a random 42 for basically nothing on a whim at a thrift store and it turns out to be a total gem of a horn...makes sense why Bach folks are always on that search!

He used to tell a story in studio class (it's been 20 years so might be a little fuzzy) about when he was in the Jacksonville Symphony and had, at that point, taken 40+ auditions and was basically ready to quit taking them. He got talked into taking two more (NC Symphony and Cleveland) and was playing for other orchestra members. He had an Edwards and a bunch of parts and was playing the list and tweaking the setups for the folks. One of them asked about that case in the corner, referring to his Bach, and he said 'its not so good' but they convinced him to play it. The Bach was everyone's unanimous choice of the best one and the horn that just felt like his voice. Then he went and won both auditions like a week or so apart. Wild. I forget if he tells that story or just some parts of it on his interview for Third Coast Trombone Retreat. Really great one.

He does have his own Warburton line though, not quite the MP one plays in middle school

He and his wife Tina recorded it almost exactly a year after he returned to playing after being knocked out for two years with a shoulder injury. Amazing record and pretty incredible story.

One of the worst 42’s I ever played was a Mt. Vernon, the best one I ever played was a friend’s 1990’s K valve. You never know.
