FS: MACK-TB831L Bass Trombone with Case

Post by ttf_Hammer »

Here is my MACK-TB831L Bass Trombone with Case. I am the original owner and bought it brand new in 2014. Just before I bought this horn, I was getting called more and more to double on bass trombone for various gigs. I already had a Yamaha YBL-321 single trigger bass trombone, but I wanted to really dive into the double trigger world. I am primarily a tenor player by the way. So, after shopping around, I came upon MACK BRASS, run by Tom McGrady, who is a pleasure to deal with. He is a professional who takes JinBao instruments from China, and inspects each instrument by hand with a close eye to see if there are any leaks, bad alignments, etc., and fixes them, while also play-testing them. He also adjusts the triggers to make it more comfortable to hold. You also get free lifetime spare parts and pieces from him. This company and service is somewhat similar to the Wessex Tubas company. With Mr. McGrady's service, you can get these bass trombones brand new for $849, which is what I paid for it. For the tenor player who gets called to double on bass, who does not have any bass experience, and who does not want to spend over $1000, this horn is great.

The bell is 9.5 inches, the bore size is 0.562, and the triggers are independent; the key is Bb/F/Gb/D. There are no dents on this horn, but a few scratches that almost no trombonist can avoid. The slide is great, a 9/10 and has no plating loss. The finger ring on the slide brace never was to my liking, but a tech guy can easily take it off for you if you wish. I have had the slide aligned last year by a reputable technician (you can ask his name privately) in the Cleveland, Ohio area last year. The triggers work great; the Gb trigger took me a while to get used to in order to find the sweet spot to press. The tuning slides all pull fine as well. The case is the original one that came with the horn, and does not have much wear and tear. It is fairly lightweight and protective, with working zippers.

This horn has treated me well for the past 3 years, mostly for commercial/big band playing. It was a great introduction to the bass trombone world for me. However, I want to let this instrument go because it is time for me to finally upgrade, especially with more bass work I am being called to do. It is a great horn, but is not top of the line like Bach, Yamaha, Conn, etc. It works great in a commercial setting, but not as well in an orchestral setting. During grad school, one of my tenor friends was asked to play bass in our orchestra, and my university did not have any double trigger bass trombones, so he borrowed mine for the semester. Blending with the rest of the section in a professional matter was always hard, especially since the bell does not resonate much. The horn is great for a professional tenor trombonist or tuba player to have in their collection for occasional doubling, or even for the beginning bass trombonist. I hope it goes to a good home and helps another instrumentalist explore the double trigger bass trombone world at a reasonable price.

Asking $700 or better offer, plus shipping to CONUS or international. I will put pictures up tomorrow, but here's the MACK BRASS link to see pictures: http://www.mackbrass.com/MACK-TB831L_Bass_Bone.php
