Public Domain Big Band Charts

Post by JLivi »

Does anyone have a link to PDFs of any public domain big band swing charts? I feel like this would be something helpful to have.

I know the Aebersold and Real Book PDFs were floating around, but didn't know if there were any standard big band tunes.

I'm sorry if something like this has already been posted about. Thanks!

FYI these are not public domain. The published ones are properly licensed with the copyright holders of the tunes in them.

The problem is that the border for Public Domain given current copyright laws is 1924. Works published before 1924 are considered Public Domain. Given the Big Band era started long after 1924, things like Stocks are still under copyright.

There are some arrangers who will offer free arrangements; sometimes as a come-on for their regular work. Digidog has one called "The Queen" that has some interesting sections.

There are many popular tunes first published before 1924 and you can certainly arrange one of them for a big band. One that comes to mind is an old Civil War tune called "Aura Lee". Elvis made it quite popular.

At the moment I have three charts for free downloading on my web page. There will be a fourth, when I have recovered from what may, or may not, have been a Corona infection.

Please take care of yourself, Daniel.

We have had a lot of fun with "The Queen" in my rehearsal Big Band.

Thanks, man! Don't know when my band will be rehearsing again, probably months from now, but am looking forward to trying these.

Thanks Man! I try the best I can to recover, but I'm in the second week of symptoms now, so I expect this to take some time. Take care you too, and see to it that you have the resources for eventually being sick for some time - IF you happen to catch this menacing virus. The other day I felt like I'd be capable of beginning to practise a little bit, but I exhausted myself from just blowing a few long tones and now I feel like I get a return of some symptoms I thought I'd overcome.... I really hope and wish for you to stay fit.

It makes me very happy to hear that you liked my writing! Your appreciation means a lot to me.

I'm sorry to hear that you in the USA also have to shut down all social events. I hope for you staying healthy too, and that we all can get back to playing with others soon - though the experts say otherwise....
