Wow, Troy!!! That is waaaaayyyy cool!!!

So you got yourself a 4!!!! With an arrowhead counter balance, no less!!!!

How great is that?!!!!

Great pictures. I'm still trying to clean mine up but I don't know how far I can go without taking off what's left of what appears to be very thin gold plating. I may just shoot the horn as is and show it warts and all.

But, hey Troy! Congratulations on the beautiful horn. I wonder if Doug would like to comment on how it played? I played Bach42BOS's LA 4 and it blew my mind how great that horn was!!!

Troy's horn is a pre-4. It measures .490 but it's not marked as a particular model. It looks great and plays pretty much like my 6 but a little tighter all over, as expected. The high range just sings and articulation is easy. It really barks nicely with a straight mute; with a cup mute it felt a little uncentered but I found that bringing the positions in a little helped a lot. I felt like it had a lot of projection and it could take being pushed, but I had to be careful not to play it quite like my 6; smaller horns always require a little more focus.

John Noxon mentioned that as well.

I'm just tickled I have an acurate caliper reading on the bore now (right between .490 & .491)

I think my horn just made before Earl started officially started making the model 4, and prolly a prototype 4 (if I had to guess).

Wondering back through this thread, I found some pics of Bjorn's LA Model 4.
Mine looks exactly the same, except mine is tuning in slide - and his is tuning in bell.
The tuning in bell, requires 1 more brace than the tuning in slide. That's the only difference.
Looks like the exact same horn, except for that! Same engraving, counterweight, trim, spit lever, etc.

I was going to have Jason Dumars do some engraving and found several websites that seemed to allow emailing him - I never got a response and ultimately had Sherry do the work - turned out very nicely- She had heard that possibly Jason had hurt his wrist and was not doing engraving any longer- Any one know more?

I don't have the instrument in my hands yet, but Sherry Huntley sent me photos of the engraving she just completed. I am blown away by the superb job that she did.

In the text area, you'll see I opted to call this a "Williams-Duda 6". On either side of my initials (HRS), there are arrowheads, which is my nod to Earl.

Can't wait to get it in my hands.

All I really did is write a check (or more accurately, provide a VISA number). The true artistry comes from John Duda and Sherry Huntley.

Now I have to practice to make myself worthy of this instrument.

Just thought I would post some interesting stuff about my Williams LA Model .522 pre 8

Just got back from Seattle and am very happy with my new Earl Williams Selmer .490 bore slide. I had Dan Oberloh make me a new tenon for the Selmer /Williams slide so it would fit on my larger bore bell. Now in theory I have two different horns. The smaller bore gives this baby a whole new feel. Still has the same overall sound quality but more response. With the larger bore slide having nickle outers and the smaller bore horn having brass outers, the darkness is an even trade almost. Brighter up high. I think I will try and get Chris Amemiya to give it a test drive to get his impression. Heres some pictures.

Got my horn back from Sherry Huntley today. It survived its perilous journey through UPS unscathed. The pictures I posted before really don't do it justice - Sherry did an absolutely fantastic job.

I tried taking a couple more photos for you all, but they don't do it justice either.

The engraving goes all the way from the rim up to end of the bell section where it meets the first ferrule. At the bell throat, the engraving actually encircles the entire throat. It's so beautiful that it's scary to take it out of the case!

Don't think the thought of gold plate hasn't crossed my mind! Also toying with the idea of silver plate.

For now, I'm going to leave it raw and start to get used to how it plays. That will give me time to save up for a plating job (after depleting the bank accounts to pay for the horn and the engraving).

Could be.
The grips, outer and slide bow - look the same.
In that pic, I had polished the outer tubes but not the grip.
Polished the grip shortly there after.

When I polished the bell out, it looked nickle.
Sterling like a Silver Sonic? or Nickel like an Opera? or plated?
I have no idea yet.

Slide is now in a Slide Dr Box, getting shipped to "The Bone Yard" today.
the bell is headed to Illinois, to get the dent out of the tuning slide crook (and a couple dings in the bell).

Hope to pull it all back together, for some quality photos in early April.
Re-doing an old french style alligator skin King 2B case for it to rest in.

And that's an original Earl Williams MPC, unless my eyes deceive me.

I'm afraid to polish up the gold plating on my Williams 4 because the plating looks so thin already and I'm afraid to take off any more. Can anyone give me a hint on what I can do? Is there such a thing as gold polish?

Thanks Richard. 3 hours, and several hand cramps later..

Check with you local jeweler, and see what he suggest.
Mine suggested some gold polish cloth, which he buys in bulk for cheap. He gave me a couple for free (but he's got me before on jewelry, so I'm sure he's still ahead).

Sure looks good Troy. I am certain that the bell is Silver Plated. Nickel is plated and not used a base metal, and Earl never built anything in Sterling. Would have been way to expensive as a production model horn for a small guy like him. If it was Sterling it would be marked as such like Bach, Conn, Selmer and King did. Almost all of the Wallace horns were Gold or Silver plated. He made more plated horns than raw brass horns for the Wallace stuff. Even "Spike's" horn is Gold Plated with elaborate engraving.

I have never seen a Wallace-Williams with tuning in the bell before either! I think you found an excellent horn there.

Well Troy I am glad it has a good home now. As far as a first I don't know. Maybe an ONLY, as I have never seen another with tuning in the bell. I have a couple of low serial numbers in the teens and they are slide tuning. A couple of others are slide tuning with different mechanisms. But no bell tuning. Update:
Turns out the Wallace & Williams slide bore, is .491 - same as my Williams 4.

Slide needs a rebuild

but... it's in the works.
