I’ve been admiring the Greenhoe basses, particularly the TIS models.

Has anyone tried these?

Old or new? Not a huge difference, but they are different.

They're all good if you're into that style of instrument. They don't really align with my sound concept so they are not my cup of tea, but they are certainly well made.

How so Bob? (I’m talking about the Schilke-Greenhoes).

They've released the limits they had self imposed on designs, so now you can get horns in materials and tapers not available from Gary. That's pretty neat.

I have a dependent TIS and really like it. Yellow brass bell, gold brass sleeves, nickel crook. I played one like it at ITF but with bell tuning and liked it real well too. They really are great horns.

mfellows821 you may have played more of the old ones than I have but I'll tell you that the new ones I have played, play as well as the older ones I have played. The M&W horns are very nice also just not my cup of tea.

I really like the greenhoes. My favorite that I've played is the conn 62h style with TIS. The m&w's are really nice as well though.

Haha me neither. I have a Greenhoe tenor and love it. But you don't have to take my word for it, my teacher (longtime SF Opera Principal) played it and liked it more than his frankenhorn- which he played as his main axe, despite owning an OG Greenhoe!

Details of his frankensetup are:
-Bach 42G Star bell (LW, french bead)
-Bach 42 Yellow tuning slide
-Custom-fab open-wrap valve section, with a King/McCraken rotary valve
-Shires yellow slide, nickel crook, 2.5 pipe

His setup is killer, biggest "issue" is that the response is different between the F side and the Bb side. Not bad, just different. My GB4-1G plays almost identically, but is more even across the valve.
