The crook, but how are they different? My understanding is that the widths of both slides are the same.

I believe that the TB47 has a .562 bore crook (like Bach 42's), and the TW47 has a .547 bore crook with the same width. Shires also offers another model slide with a .547 bore, but with the narrow width of a Conn. Some people prefer the width of a Bach style slide, but still prefer the .547 crook (esp. if they play thayers that can dig into your neck with a narrow slide).

Ok, that makes sense.

Yellow bell, TB47, rotor, Bach 42-lead pipe - that would get into B42 territory?

Yes, it would.

As Jim says, the difference is the bore size of the crooks. They are larger than Jim says though - matching the outer slide bores, not the inner slide bores. I don't know those numbers offhand.

I'm not sure, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the TB47 crook is .562 ", T47 is .547", and TW47 is something in between (.555"?)... :shuffle: :?:

OK - just went to their website:

T47 - slide with tenor crook
TW47 - slide with wide crook
TB47 - slide with bass crook

Like Gabe said, the bores I referred to are actually inner slide bores, so the crooks are the bore of the appropriate outer slide, whatever that difference is. So the first slide compares to Conns, the last one to Bachs, and the middle one has the specs of a Conn w/the wider distance between slides of a Bach. I'm speaking in general terms - not taking into account any differences in materials or shape of tubing that might differ between various manufacturers.

I found the TB47 to be a bit more squirrelly than the TW47. It was a minor but noticeable difference from the TW47. It could have been the entire combination of parts, so your milage may vary. The "problem" was solved with a longer leadpipe (2L) and this is now my main setup. Lower register just pops, and it gives you the sound of a 42B style horn with shires playability.
