I will not hide the fact that I am a big fan of Yamaha trombones. I utilize the "Yeo Grip" and use my YBL-612 RII quite effectively when using both valves. I love the paddle positioning and geometry.

However, like many, I'd like to also have a INdependent horn, so I'm zeroing in on these. My biggest questions, aside from how they play, is whether anyone knows of a G-crook available for the YBL-830. In terms of playing and adding facility. I feel that the G-attachment is a better option, and there seems to be a growing number of people who agree, such as Denson Pollard, who has a Courtois model that can be in G / Gb tuning.

The YBL-613H also had this option, so I would like to have that option, it looks like the 613H would be the way to go, however the Heavy weight Gold Brass bell is something I'm iffy on. Any advice?

I am getting confused by you question, are you asking about a dependent Bb F Eb horn? Second valve G dependent ? Not very usefully, you get the B natural above the pedal BB very far out, and no nice alternative positions from the G valve, since its dependent. Or what is your question?

An Indy Bb F Gb horn gives you nice alternative positions using the Gb side, especially in the middle to lower range, especially in keys with many flats or many sharps, if you learn them. And nice major third appigios in the double valve range.

An Indy Bb F G horn gives you equally niceG alternative positions in the middle to low range, nice minor thirds an quarts in the double valve register, and a longer stretch to natural B above pedals.

I prefer the Indy GB option, but its more a matter of taste

No, there is no stock option for a G slide for the 830. You may be able to have one made.

If you really want that tuning, then the 613 is the way to go.

Yeah, I think I'm in love with having the "choice", so the YBL-613H is going to have to be the way I go. Just need to wait around until one in good condition pops up. I've also found with my 612 that which crook I have in definitely affects how the horn resonates. Most of what I play is standard orchestral stuff, so I rarely get to use the second valve.

I played a Chinese copy of a 613H for about 10 years that came with both tuning slides. I eventually switched to a dependent (822G—I’m with you on a Yamaha). If I was buying an independent, I’d be looking for a 613H with both slides. I wouldn’t worry about the heavy bell. My Xeno bell is marketed as heavy, but it barks when I ask it to..

If the 830 Gb slide is the same configuration as the 613H slide, you might just be able to have it cut.

From what I've seen, the "receiver" portion on the 830 is longer, which may mean there's no way to get the tuning slide short enough to make it work.

The width of both F and Gb/D sides of the 830 are the same so you can swap them. However, the receiver end of Gb/D side is long, as opposed to the (too) short one of the 613H. Even so, the F slide still cannot be pushed all the way into the Gb/D side. Small portion sticks out. At that position it plays a very flat G.

That means you have to cut both the receiver end’s legs and the F tuning slide’s legs to make it tunable to G, and maybe preparing extension if you want to have the option for tuning it back to Gb.

Go for the dark horse option and find a YBL-813UG!

HAH! With the way things are in the world, getting one of those won't be easy.

The challenge might make it worth it though... I wonder how different they actually are.

I have only seen it once in japanese Yahoo Auction page. A rare, rare horn.
