Are you referring to the ring on the throat? If so, it's so he can detach the bell when it goes into the case / bag.

Landgren plays a Yamaha custom-made dual-bore red brass trombone with a removable ball flare.
And of course uses his Yamaha "Nils Landgren Signature" mouthpiece.
