May be in Hong Kong and Macao at the end of October / start of November. Any good trombone or music related sights to see based on your experience eg Blues/jazz/Rock  bars, classical venues, shops etc? Any other recommended sights or activities?  Trying to get underneath what the guidebooks say.

I lived in Hong Kong for about 12 months in 1977 and was completely captured by it. I had a unit in Cloud View Road, overlooking Causeway Bay and the Harbour. There are now many more skyscraper unit blocks than there were in my day, when the tallest building in Hong Kong (in fact Asia) was the Connaught Centre, aka Jardine House. The circular design of the windows has earned the building the nickname by the locals of "The House of a Thousand Arseholes".    You can't miss it because it is near the Star Ferry terminal.

Of course, that was before the Brits gave Hong Kong back to China but, apart from the locals protesting for self rule, I am told by friends who still live and work there that it is very much the same in terms of living conditions, work and music. For an expat, anyway.

My very favourite place for entertainment and jazz was Ned Kelly's Last Stand, a venue specialising in Traditional Jazz. In my day it had a very Aussie atmosphere and the band was led by an Aussie trombone player. The food however, was very British. AAA rating as far as I am concerned. It is still the top venue for all Trad fans visiting Hong Kong.

Coincidentally, I gave the details of Ned's to a friend who will be visiting Hong Kong some time this week. I'll let you know what he says about the place.

I was out there 2 years running in the '80's when Red Price ran it. Happy days.

Thanks for the information. That's one night sorted out!

For other nights there is always the infamous Lan Kwai Fong (aka LKF) district in Central, which consists of 3 or 4 streets that are lined with bars and clubs. And Wan Chai Wednesday is great!   Especially if you're looking for company.

Well, just back from a great night at Ned Kelly’s.  Thanks for the heads up.  Good musicians, fun band and friendly mid-market bar with good choice of beer and food. Thoroughly recommended.

 

My experience with Ned Kelly's was 40 years back but it's good to hear they are still keeping up the high standards. Actually, everyone that has visited in recent years has said the same thing.
