I am far from being an expert, so I did some googling and came up with

Trombones:- Dick Shearer, Fred Carter, Mike Jamieson, Mike Wallace.

Bass Trombone, Tuba:- Phil Herring

Having played a few Kenton charts, it could be 4 tenors + 1 bass, 3 tenors + 2 bass, 3 tenors +1 bass + 1 tuba so it could have been Mike Wallace as Ellefson guessed or it might have been Phil Herring. Whoever it was, it was a helluva bass trombone player.

Cheers

Yes, it was Mike Wallace, as confirmed by Michael Sparke's books "This is an Orchestra!" and "The Studio Sessions".

Although Kenton had 5 players in the trombone section ever since 1946 (from 1955 to 1956 the 5th book was played entirely on tuba), in 1959 he finalized the instrumentation of 3 tenors and 2 basses; as this was recorded in 1972, this is the instrumentation that the band would've been using. The 5th bass trombone doubled on tuba but this was usually reserved for ballads, with some exceptions.
