Okay, so I'm pretty open minded. I play an open tenor, YSL354 and it's a nice horn. Looking for something a little different. I played a Benge 190F. The lacquer was beat up but it was a really good sounding horn. Very different than my 354. The shop had $895 on the tag (they'd probably take $750). I'm also going to try a Jupiter XO 1028 that is purported to be in excellent shape (the guy wants $775) and from pics lacquer looks good. The Benge 190F has the .547" large bore, the Jupiter has the dual bore, .495 / .509. Anyhow I'm not a pro and ant feedback is appreciated. I'm not playing classical / orchestra (mostly jazz type stuff).

The Benge 190F is an orchestral style horn. Works good for 3rd in Big Band as well. And go well in Church ensembles.

For mostly jazz, your 354 is pretty good. The Jupiter XO may also float your boat if the cost won't set you back too far.

In the end, for non-professional playing it's a matter of how it feels to you. You may sound better on the Jupiter or you may not. Try it and see how you like it.

I'd say the 190F is probably not the direction I would go as a jazz trombonist.

That said, there's a whole universe of great jazz tenors out there just waiting for more notes to be poured into them. That XO might be great! There are plenty of Kings, Conns, etc out there in that price bracket that would be a great buy from a 354.

I'm definitely not unhappy with my 354. It's a decent horn. The slide is 8.5/10. Lacquer is new(ish). I've been comparing the 354 to a beat up 3B (lacquer gone but slide 7.5 / 10) for sound's sake. I'm completely not into large bore trombones, so I can't say much about the Benge 190F. Have tried the XO on a few gigs, and it did the job on 3rd chair in a university big band. But if you can find one, try a Kühl & Hoyer trombone, and you won't be disappointed.

K&H: depends on the model. Some are stellar!

XO manufactures completely professional trombones. 775 is not a bad price. If you can make a sound you like on it, buy it. It felt a little heavy, but others say it is not. The only problem is, we don't know how it's gonna take the years. Benge has proved its quality in the past decades.

You need a sound in mind. All of these measurements really matter only for blending and matching parts.

Played on a Benge for 12 years before switching to bass bone. The horn will retain its value longer than the xo being "American " parts are being sorced out. IMHO. The XO seems to be a modern horn could be a quick sell, for a lot more than the Benge is worth now. Sound wise, my horn was at home in a jazz ensemble, with a switch of mouthpiece. Never played constantly on yellow brass horn, though.

Where do you live? Old Cerveny trombones also can be great, if they're available in your country.
