I am in need of an inexpensive/dependable straight tenor trombone at this time to play on overnight gigs and won't mind a small ding or two.

I already have Bach 42BO for my symphony work and a nice Bach 42G for lighter gigs. Also have Yamaha 611 for bass gigs.

If anyone has suggestions that won't break the bank; please send my way.

A Yamaha 354 in reasonably good shape should fill the bill. Don't be confused by the "student" label -- these are very good instruments. And readily available used.

Check with the usual suspects: Dillon, Hornguys, etc. as well as DJ Kennedy. Also check our Classifieds.

Olds Recording for $500?

A Yamaha 354 on Craigslist. Try before you buy so you know it hasn’t been damaged. Also a Getzen 351.

There are several King (Tempo) 606 trombones listed on eBay for reasonable prices. These instruments, if in properly maintained condition, can be surprisingly good.

You also might look for Olds trombones (Ambassador, Special, Studio). Robust horns.

Carol Brass is also good. They have both .500 and .508 straight trombones.

All great suggestions above. Also, take a look a the Getzen 351 (yellow bell) or 451 (rose bell).

A Yamaha 200 is essentially the same horn as the 354. I read once that the 200 had a nickel silver outer slide, but the current Yamaha online specs describe the two horns' specs as identical. My impression has always been they are the same horn just numbered differently and offered with slightly different cases.

I have been told that the 200 is offered only to retail dealers so that they have a horn to sell that can't be price compared to online discounters. (I don't suspect there is much difference in price between a 200 retail store or a 354 online, but I don't know.)

Regardless, if you are looking for a 354, expand your search to also include the 200. Not only are they essentially the same horn, they may be exactly the same horn (but for some engraving).

I have a nice old Holton 65 with excellent original silver finish that you can have for $375 shipped in US. Slide has tubes wear and repair traces but is good and smooth. Fun horn. Send PM.
