Hello Trombone Nation!

I have started playing slide trombone again at age 63! Last time I played was in high school.  I have found this Forum to be a delightful source of information and am fascinated by reading through the various threads.
I started up a blog to chronicle my efforts at self-teaching. All are invited to visit at:
 http://learntheslidetrombonewithme.blogspot.com/

Thanks for being here and many thanks for all the useful information. Perhaps, by sharing my blog, it can provide inspiration to others out there to take up their horns once again.

Regards,
Charles Brown

I'm Bob. I live in Sterling Hgts, MI near Detroit. I work as a barber and play with a Latin jazz group LL7. I've played in the Air Force, local big bands, orchestras and such but am really lovin the small group. I play a 32 year old Martin but am on the search for new horn so I do lots of reseach and reading. This forum is good to comb through on equipment issues. I'll probably read much more than I post.

Hey there,
I've been on the forum for a couple of months, but I haven't formally introduced myself. My name's Ben and I played from the 6th grade through my first semester of college,  then took a 3 1/2 year hiatus. After graduating about 6 months ago, I started playing again, and I now play in a folk rock band (not the usual place you'd expect to find a trombone, but we make it work) and a ska band. I work as a technical writer to support my unhealthy trombone-buying habit, because people aren't exactly jumping at the bit to pay you for ska gigs (or folk rock-trombone amalgamations, for that matter).

Cheers!

Hello all,  I'm Mark, 45, from Dallas, Texas and I played from 7th grade through junior college. After that I would just play occasionally off and on, when the mood would hit.  The desire to re-dedicate to playing in earnest has grown recently, so I've been trying to practice regularly, learning from self-observation, and among other sources, the various discussions on the boards here.

At the risk of some gratuitous plugging, I would like to say that I've had the awesome privilege of playing with Joe Jackson back in High School.  It was from reading some of his blogging that got me on the path to discovering this forum.  After browsing the forum for a while I came across and contacted member Eric Edwards concerning alterations on a Bach 12, and the work he did on it totally opened the horn up.

I appreciate everyone's contribution and dedication to this all-things-trombone-from-A-to-Z forum.  It's helped me a lot and hopefully I will be able to contribute in kind down the road.

Played with Chattanooga Symphony very briefly, and the Knoxville Symphony for a year while teaching at Carson-Newman College.
Took up a career in the world of business, laid the horn down for too many decades to count, then recently for no apparent reason brought my Trombone out of hiding to see if still works.  The jury is still out.
My wife and I have been subscribers to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for years.  Free plug:  In recent years, the Atlanta Symphony Trombone section has really kicked it up a notch.  Their performances are always worth the ticket price!  Go if you can.

My name is Rajeev, I'm a sophomore at Holmdel High School. I'm a bit of a band geek. Image I played piano for a couple of years when I was really young, but I didn't like it and quit. In sixth grade I had a random urge to join band. The director gave me a choice of either trumpet or trombone, and in a split second decision, I chose trombone. Best decision ever. I've loved it ever since. I'm currently in our Jazz Band as well as our Wind Ensemble, doubling on Euphonium, which I picked up last year. Beyond music, I'm also a huge science nerd and tech geek. I look forward to playing music for the rest of my life!

Hi! I'm Steve Munger and I live in Portland, Oregon. Many years ago, I was a very serious trombone student and went on to get a degree in music composition. However, I took about 25 years off from both, working in the computer field to support my family. The last several years, I've been back playing and trying to write music again. I play in an an amateur orchestra. My current instrument is a King 4B. One claim to fame - a set of trombone duets (for tenor and bass) that I wrote many years ago is listed in Tom Everett's Annotated Guide to Bass Trombone Literature. I've been reading the forum for quite a while and finally decided I might have something to contribute so signed up! I'm looking forward to many interesting discussions on anything trombone and music related!

Thanks for the interest! They're still in manuscript! I'm slowly transferring the more worthwhile pieces that I wrote decades ago onto the computer - I'll try and do those duets soon & upload a PDF. It's just 3 pieces.

Hi! I'm Arnold and I'm from Indonesia (I think I might be the first one too).
I'm a third grader in senior high school, though not for long now because I'm having my final exam starting today.
I've been around here for a while and found that this forum is a very good place so I decided to join.

I've been playing brass for almost 6 years. Started as a baritone player in my junior high's marching band. Played baritone for 2 years then switched to tuba. Played tuba for 2 years and switched to trombone. It was a coincidence actually, I was just goofing around, trying all of the instruments in my school. When I played the trombone, I fell in love with it. So here I am trying to be as good as I can be with this lovely instrument.

I play in one of Indonesia's best youth orchestra that is Twilite Youth Orchestra (yes,it's twilite not twilight Image ). I'm first chair there. I also played in my school's wind ensemble and sometime I played with other groups who need an amateur trombonist. Please don't compare Indonesia's brass playing to your country's. Most of your college students will be better than Indonesia's professional trombonist.  Image

I want to be better and better in my playing so I really appreciate all the stuffs in this forum. Hope I can contribute something to this forum as well. Thanks!

Best regards,
Arnold

Hi all,

This is my first post here and I'd like to introduce myself a little. I'm a 44 year old Irishman who has played around with guitar, bass and latterly, keyboard for a few years. All playing is for my own enjoyment and have never 'inflicted' my music on anybody for various reasons. So anyway, my latest musical quest, is to embark on an unknown journey. That of the Trombone. Having been inspired by watching Tremé, I feel drawn towards it but won't know how strong that draw actually is at least until I pick one up and attempt my first note. There are a couple of things that intrigue me, mainly the 'non-linear' scale. Changing non consecutive positions as a scale is played just seems totally illogical when compared to the keyboard especially, but I guess that's just one of the charms of the trombone.

I'm really delighted to have found such a wonderful resource as this. As is the case with most every forum for instruments, it's a community where I see everyone is pulling in the same direction and helping and wanting others to improve by sharing their knowledge and experience. I'm still a little surprised that I was able to choose ToneBone as a username. I tried a couple before hitting on this, fully expecting it to be already taken.

There's a very real awareness of the notion of 'buy cheap-buy twice', but I obviously don't want to spend a whole lot until I get a handle on things and know whether I'm going to stick with it or not. If and when I get to the point where I know I've been bitten and smitten, then I'll be much more open to the idea of spending a bit of time and money in finding and buying a good quality horn. One option, probably my best, would be to find a pBone and get a few basics down and then I'd always have a good fun instrument as a back-up of sorts. Finding a pBone, however, is something of an issue of late for all wanting one, though.

Whether what follows that will be new, or something a little more 'aged' that will be a choice I'll make at the time. I've no problem with the idea of buying something that's been around the block a few times, as long as it's playing properly and not suffering the ravages of time. I quite like the idea of buying something of my own 'vintage' From 1967. I realise I may be getting ahead of myself here, but that's just an ideal. I am, however, as you can read, thinking positively and being optimistic that I'll be in the position to buy a proper instrument.

Living in Ireland, unfortunately means there's extremely little choice for either new or secondhand models immediately available. There is one specialist woodwind instrument shop in the whole country who only order in trombones when there's a confirmed sale for them. The owner, while knowledgable, was rather dour and prickly, so I don't feel I'm missing anything by not going in there again! Most of the music shops around deal only with the usual ranges of guitars, keyboards and drums, with brass instruments being a very narrow niche. An afterthought, if any at all.

To date, well, yesterday, actually, was the first time I ever held a trombone in my hands. I went around the music shops of Dublin and found the sum total of one singular trombone! The model itself was a Conn-Selmer Prelude which I've searched for here and have not been very encouraged by what I read. The sales assistant was very helpful and gave me a number for a teacher in my area. Having a teacher with nothing to practice on from day to day is a bit mad. But at least I hope to be able to go there and get hands on, or rather lips on contact.

There are online sales, but there's too much at risk where trombones are concerned to be able to make a reasoned and considered opinion. With so much being dependent on feel and hearing, it's not something a learner or intermediate player could do with any confidence when there's a considerable amount of money to be parted with. The only exception I'd be willing to make to that would be to seek the assistance of well respected TTF member DJ Kennedy to find something that fits my criteria. The only issue then would be carriage to Ireland. That could well turn out to be a deal killer.

In the meantime, I've been trying to immerse myself in as much inspirational music as possible and Jack Teagarden and Tommy Dorsey are two legendary performers whose style I like and that I've got to get plenty of.  In the more modern era, Trombone Shorty, who I've seen perform a few times on TV is certainly helping the popularity of the instrument. Watching more and more of Tremé has really stoked my interest, and, as mentioned above, is what brought this on in the first place. The music in every episode is just magnificent, and I would defy anyone to watch it and not move, or be moved with the plight of the many stories emanating from the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. A truly wonderful series.

Following on from the Tremé influence, I've been looking for and finding compilations of New Orleans music, which has brought about a great variety stuff, whether trombone/brass related or not. Jazz, Soul, Funk and not least my first love, which is Blues. They manage to bring so many genres together in New Orleans into its own indefinable style. There are so many more artists I want to listen to, but thankfully, iTunes, with its 90 second previews, and Grooveshark are absolutely ideal for checking out new leads without having to pay out hard-earned cash on discovering you may have bought something that didn't deliver on the expectations. I just need to stop buying for a while so I can actually afford an instrument for myself!  Image

Anyway, with the help of all here, I'm looking forward to the journey. I'm ready to hitch a ride with all those who wish to impart their knowledge, and do the same for anyone I can help in whatever way I can. Even if that's sharing a laugh at my own expense with some silly mistake I've made and helping some other beginner avoid that particular mistake. Don't worry, I'm not looking to corner the market on that, there's still plenty of their own to make!  Image

I just hope I can stick around long enough to do my username justice.

Yours, in Music

Damien

P.S. A special hello to RedHotMama who assisted me when I registered here.

Hello, Damien! Welcome aboard! Image

I strongly recommend that you get in touch with our member Tomahawk, a computer programmer who lives in - yep - Dublin, Ireland. He owns three trombones and would surely be able to help with tracking down a reasonable one in your area.

http://tromboneforum.org/index.php?action=profile;u=4093

I understand your problem about finding a decent music store - there are far more selling guitars, keyboards and drums than anything else. However, if you CAN find one, rather than buying a pBone I would try instrument rental. You can rent a "proper" brass instrument for a number of months and if you then decide to keep it, the amount you have already spent is taken off the cost of buying it. The pBones, fun though they are, lack quality control and their faults can be many and variable. Sometimes, the bell drops off. With mine, it's the annoyance of the slide going "tick" every time it comes back to the closed position (and this is after an hour of careful work with a file!).

You have given an awful lot of information in your post, so I hope that you'll split up your various questions and put them into the relevant sections. You should be aware that (even though I don't understand it myself!!!), not all members read the Practice Break, so you'll get more replies in what I call the "serious sections".

I look forward to seeing your future posts! Image

Apologies to Arnold!

Welcome to you too! Image

I saw your posts about the Hagmann valve - how is it going?

It's great to see a member from Indonesia. As you say, I think you might be the first, and it's always good for a forum, particularly one which comprises a high proportion of one nationality (in this case, American), to interact with people who may have a different perspective on music (both as a hobby and as a profession) and on life, the universe and everything....

Hi,

Thanks for the warm welcome, RedHotMama. By the way, I like your signature, a nice little twist on the classic, but every bit as appropriate.

Great to know there's at least another member from Dublin on here. I thought there would be, but  when I tried to search, nothing came up. I obviously wasn't doing something right.

What you say about the pBone is everything that scares me about buying something unseen. It's a lottery. There are plenty who have got good ones, but they weren't chosen, they just got lucky. It would eventually, if not immediately lead to resentment and disillusionment and ultimately lack of enthusiasm to practice. I don't want to be running down all of them, tarring them all with the same brush, but money's scarce enough without spending it on something that could lead to a dead end.

I wasn't aware that money spent on a rental instrument could be taken off from a purchase. That breathes new life into that possibility. Thank you.

My extensive ramblings (I hope everyone is still awake after that) in my first post are mere observations and thoughts to give some idea of where I'm coming from - and I don't mean Dublin Image I was hoping to find a thread like this so I could introduce myself, rather than jumping in feet first in the 'serious sections'. No doubt I'll have plenty of questions to ask when I get acquainted with some brassware.

Now that that's out of the way, I'll get in touch with Tomahawk and see what he says about the prospect of helping find a trombone, whether rented or otherwise.

Damien

Hello there!

I'm Oliver, nice to be here.

Due to an injury sustained last year which put me off my other past-time (Diving) for a couple of months I started thinking about playing the trumpet - and then I came to my senses. Image

I'd played the trombone as a young teen, some 35 yeas ago, so it made sense to pick that back up. Did some good research (on these pages) and carefully bought a bone on ebay. 5 months on I'm a little unsure what I want to do with it other than play it for joy of playing it but I really enjoy playing it and am improving all the time. As a kid I didn't like the odd Oompah music that the town band I played with was playing, though I did like playing, and had no idea how to find the music I did like - if I even knew what music I did like, so ended up dispirited with it and eventually stopped playing. Now with the internet and youtube, and 20 years spent dancing in the clubs of London, I've got a great idea of what I like and how to find it. Found a private teacher, got a neat practice space nearby, and settled into a class at the local adult ed centre...

Sadly I now know that I wont be playing hot latin breaks any time soon, but hopefully I'm on the right track.....
Anything that's got a groove and makes me want to shake my hips is fine by me.
Sadly my hips have a bit of arthritis from having shaken them a bit too much, oh, and falling off mountain bikes, oh - and skateboards..... so the dancing's taken a bit of a back seat for a while - though I still shake a leg every now and then, if the music grabs me.

Gotta go now but hope to contribute in some way in the future.

Cheers!

Hi all!

I've already posted a bit, but I figured I should properly introduce myself. The name's Andrew Mitchell, from Norfolk, VA. I picked up my first horn 4 years ago as a sophomore in high school, after playing violin for 5 years. l just finished my freshman year as a music education student at Virginia Commonwealth University. This summer I'm performing as the bass trombonist at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg. Next september I will be moving to Wales to begin a bachelor's degree in Physics with Music at Cardiff University. Although I'm happily employed as a bass trombonist, before now I had only ever played tenor.
I play a Conn 88HT with a Greenhoe valve, and keep an old Bach Mercedes II for the little jazz I do play.

To sum up:
Horn: Conn 88HT Greenhoe
Time playing: 4 years
Employment: Bass trombonist @ Busch Gardens
Previous School: VCU, Music Ed
Current School: Cardiff University, Wales, Physics with Music.

Nice to meet everyone!

Ok, so I'm technically not new...but I may as well be. I will consider myself a newb. I joined a while back, but haven't really been active at all (this includes with my playing). So, I know there's a lot here, but I'm looking forward to getting acclimated and learning a lot here.

Hi.  Thanks for the welcome.

I'm Dennis Clason.  I'm a trombone junkie living and working in southern New Mexico, Las Cruces to be exact.  I support my music habit as a professor of Applied Statistics at New Mexico State University.  I play tenor trombone in the Mesilla Valley Concert Band, the Big Band on the Rio Grande and bass in the Borderland 'Bone Quartet.  In the past I've played in the Las Cruces Symphony and the Santa Fe Community Orchestra.

My favorite playing genre is brass quintet, but I haven't been able to keep a quintet going for more than 2- 3 years.

I've done some transcriptions for the quartet, and that has been fun.

My arsenal consists of a 1972 Bach 36B, which is currently getting an overhaul.  I'll report on the overhaul when I get it back.  For jazz, I play a 1956 King 3B with both valve and slide sections.  My bass is a 1972 Bach 50 (Grendel) that's been so heavily modified (not by me!) that the factory wouldn't recognize it.  Grendel has O.E. Thayer valves 19 and 20.  I guess they belong in a museum, but I'll keep playing them until it's time for Grendel to get an overhaul.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum as well. My name is Bart, I'm 25 years old and from the Netherlands (very, very close to Germany and Belgium though).
I'm a freelance bass trombonist, occasionally playing the tenor. Also, I'm pretty active in the early music scene, studying (bass) sackbut at the Cologne conservatory with Wim Becu.
Well, I'm pretty interested in all kinds of historic stuff and am going to do my master thesis on the history and development of the bass trombone and its siblings. Until now, I've already found a lot of interesting things, not in the last place on this forum.
Well, thanks for having me!!  Image

Cheers,
Bart

Greetings. Returning to trombone after a 10 year absence. Played through second year of college when my trombone was stolen from storage while I was on deployment. Kept putting off buying a new one until now.
Currently taking lessons at local college with a two year goal of applying for 145th OK National Guard Band as was my ambition when I quit playing.

Hey, I'm Matt and I'm working on geting back into trombone.
I marched Baritone with a world class DCI corps this year, and am playing euphonium for my high school's band. I played trombone before that, but wasn't too good, so I got my general brass playing stuff together and am going at it again. I own a Bach 42 BO (I was one of those kids who wasn't that good on a student model, but was still suggested to get one) so that will be my primary instrument.
Eventually I want to be able to play bone in my school's jazz band and any other opportunities that arise.

I know a few of the folks in the SFCB.  There is also quite a good community orchestra there.  I'm at the other end of the state, down near El Paso, Texas.

Hello, My name is Matthew Stewart and I'm new to this forum. Just looking to get acquainted with everyone and get the help that I seek. I'm not sure where to post this or which thing to go to find help. If anyone knows, please let me know. What I'm trying to post is below:

"I'm currently on the search for a Bach 42 trombone slide whether its the standard or LT model. I would like to spend less than $1000 if possible. Any body that knows a place to look at, call for information and prices, or actually has one they are looking to sell please get a hold of me. My current 42LT slide is in bad condition and it's the only option I have right now due to having any replacement slide. It has dents and slide rot already formed and it's just getting worse. The repair tech at my university told me the slide was good as it's gonna get without being damaged any more! If anyone can help let me know, Thanks!!!"

Hi everybody.

Well, I'm not that new at this forum, as you can check by clicking on this post. The thing is, after a long time of thinking about taking trombone lessons but not doing it mainly because...

1. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a decent trombone
2. I didn't want to spend little money on a piece of junk

...I finally pulled the plug after knowing about the pBone, which I think is the absolute best option for someone who wants to get started on this wonderful instrument but also wants the best in a budget since it won't be his/her main instrument (I'm a 26-year experience bass player). Of course, I'll think about getting a brass trombone if I ever get good at it. But in the meantime, the pBone is the perfect practice weapon in my uneducated opinion. A couple days ago I received my red pBone, and since it seems that the included plastic mouthpiece isn't that good according to several reviews, I also bought a brass 6 1/2 AL mouthpiece.

I'll have my first lesson with a professional trombone player next friday. I've been a long time trombone fan and I know many things about the instrument in theory, which I think that's a valuable strength as a beginner. Right now I feel very enthusiastic about learning how to play this instrument. Anyway, I appreciate any advice, motivational quotes and/or suggestions you may have.  Image

Hi,my name is Chuck and I just picked the trombone back up after 30 years of not playing. Man! It doesn't seem possible that it has been that long! I am looking forward to getting back into the instrument and hopefully finding a group to play in in the near future. I am also looking forward to getting to know other players here and maybe expanding my knowledge of the instrument. I play mostly jazz. I also play the guitar and have used that for my music fix for a long time now, but really missed the trombone.

Hello all!  This is more of a return than a new member announcement...I might have even posted somewhere else in the 50+ pages here  Image  Anyway I was a brash young high school know-it-all then, and got into a lot of political arguments which led me to deleting my account as I got older and my views of the world started to change.  And so I'd like to get back in the community in a positive fashion.  It's tough out there for trombone players and we all need to stick together methinks.

I've had a lot of interesting experiences since then, living in Prague, going to NYU, and studying briefly at Berklee with Phil Wilson.  Ultimately I've decided that I don't want to pursue music as a profession as it seems to take a lot of the enjoyment out of things.  I'm finally on the path to getting my degree in political science and figuring out what I want to do with my life (does anybody know?).  That being said I've decided to sell my bass and switch to tenor....I'm a much better bass trombonist, but if it's not going to be my source of income I figure I might as well play what I have the most fun with.  Shameless plug:  I'll be listing my Yamaha YBL-822G Doug Yeo model with pics in the classifieds pretty soon if anyone's interested.

Alright, I just wanted to reestablish my presence here and say hi to everyone....so hi!

My name is Chase Prescott, I am a music major at Alvin Community College in the process of transferring to the University of Houston and I'm auditioning for  Moore's School of Music in March. I play bass trombone but I've been in a struggle for the last several months in an attempt to find a bass trombone for myself. I currently own a Getzen Custom Series tenor trombone which has sufficed enough for me to practice on. Music is my passion and I won't let anything get in my way.   Image

My name is Chris, I'm in the 10th grade, and I like the trombone! I play in the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony. My trombone is a school yamaha bass trombone. I would like to buy a decent used large bore tenor someday, but for now, the bass will do. I'm looking forward to getting to know everybody on the forum!

Greetings All!

I have been utilizing the tromboneforum for awhile and decided I just needed to sign up.  I studied music ed at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.  Then I enlisted in the Marine Corps as a musician and served four years as a bone player in the Third Marine Aircraft Wing Band in San Diego.  After that I played with a local San Diego jazz orchestra (the Moonlight Serenade Orchestra).  Now I live in Toledo, Ohio and play with Jeff McDonald and whatever name he is giving his big band that night (Swingmania, Trotters Tavern Orchestra, Jeff McDonald's Jazz All-Stars, etc.).  I haven't touched my Bach 42B since college.  I haven't touched my Bach 42B since college (the military provides horns), and I am currently playing on an Olds Super from 1948 that my grandfather bought and played when he was in high school.

Hi everyone! Happy Holidays!

My name is Tao Guthrie. I'm a New York freelance bone player currently on tour with Dreamgirls for the majority of 2013.

I have a performance degree from the Dana School of Music, Youngstown State University.

I play on a Conn 88H SGX CL with a custom Doug Elliot mouthpiece (his stuff is the best)
I also have a backup 88H yellow brass bell and a King 3b floating around somewhere in the states.
I played sliver plated Yamaha Xeno tenor and bass bones with Blast!  The bass bone is pretty nice.

Check me out at taoguthrie.com

Hello,  I am new to the forum and coming back to playing trombone after 20 years of studying and playing guitar as my primary instrument. Saw a pBone at Sam Ash and it brought back fond memories of Band/Orchestra in Junior High and High School... marching, solo and ensemble contests and all county/state band where all great experiences and as the price was so low I grabbed one. After high school I focused on playing guitar in the blues/rock and jazz idioms professionally and semi professionally including spending a few great years studying at Musicians Institute in LA. I am most interested in big band and small combo jazz playing these days in regards to trombone , but  first I need to spend some time getting my chops back in order and just enjoy getting to know the instrument that first introduced me to the joys of making music all over again.

Hello Everyone,
My name is Eric and I am a senior in high school from Arizona- where you walk outside and instantly burst into flames Image I have been playing for five and a half years (after transferring from percussion) and absolutely love it. My Getzen 1047F is my main ax but I have a Getzen 300 Series for playing lead in big bands- got it $135 new! Commercial, jazz and legit-classical low/bass parts are my favorite but I can double on any low brass horn if I need to. I also sing and have been fortunate enough to have played with and under some pretty cool kats like Conrad Herwig, Fred Forney, Lewis Nash and Frank G. Dubuy (US Army, LTC Ret.) After I graduate, I intend to study music in college and enter a service band at some point, hopefully ‘retiring’ to studio work and some kind of teaching. That being said, time to go practice!

Right now I'm applying to local schools like Arizona State, Northern Arizona, Grand Canyon University and Mesa Community College. I was banking on attending a service academy for a career in the military but life happened and now I'm focusing on music. Doug Yeo and David Vining are in-state but right now I think two years of chop and skill building, theory lessons and gen-ed credits are in order before I join a service band or decide where to go from there.
