ANZAC Day 2017

Post by ttf_Graham Martin »

Tomorrow is ANZAC Day in Australia, the day that marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

ANZAC Day 2017

At the final concert of the New Zealand Brass Band championships the Army Band did a nice tribute with a piece called "Passchendale" relating to the battle of October 1917.  They also played the New Zealand national anthem, which I'd never heard before.  Nice tune.

I meant no disrespect for anyone that fought and/or died in that battle. It's just that it was a huge waste of lives and resources. As was much of the rest of WWI. I just finished a 500 page book on the Somme. The Brits suffered over 400,000 casualties to moves the lines less than 10 miles. And PBS just did a very good documentary of the war as part of the American Experience series. It is available on the PBS channel on Roku if you have it.

ANZAC Day 2017

It really is a very moving day in Australia with true respect being paid to those that fought and those that died at Gallipoli and every battle since. The dawn services were particularly special and surprisingly, because the visit was not pre announced, our Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull had travelled to Iraq and Afghanistan to meet Australian troops ahead of Anzac Day; also to assess Australia's contribution to the wars raging in both countries. He must have jumped on a plane directly after his meeting with Vice President Pence.

It is also a very big day for many community bands because they are involved in providing music for the dawn services and leading the Anzac Day marches taking place. Our band is leading the parade for the Redlands.

For me, a migrant to Australia, I have always been deeply impressed by how much the Anzac Spirit is such a big part of the Australian psyche, affecting all parts of Australian life with its emphasis on bravery and mateship.

Lest we forget—lest we forget!
