I have this Getzen Tone Balanced Super Deluxe trombone, and I'm wondering when it was made, the serial number is 58025 and says Pat. Pend.
I also believe it is a 60 "dude" model
Thank you

This trombone was made before a fire that destroyed the records at the Getzen plant (including serial number lists).

There are two models that were called Super Deluxe. The Dude has curved bent hex stock braces which makes for an artistic look. but is uncomfortable to hold. What I know of as the Super Deluxe has straight braces with hexagonal flanges. The straight brace instrument is actually a good horn. I learned on one that was property of the New York City Board of Education. I never cared for the Dude, however.

I owned a Super Deluxe for a short while in college. It was a blend of the two you mentioned, Bruce. I believe The Dude was a slightly cheaper model that was less “flashy” as far as materials went. IIRC the ferrule braces were round stock on these. The Super Deluxe I owned had all the weird curved braces but they were made of hexagonal brass stock. Thumb hole. Copper and nickel accents.

Horn played fine and the slide was actually surprisingly good but it was slightly squirrelly above high B flat.

Found some pictures of mine. Forgive the potato-quality screenshots.

All that said I forgot to mention that Bruce is right about the fire. We will likely never know exactly when they were made, BUT it was probably late ‘50s/early ‘60s. The album cover of Somethin’ Sanctified by The Slide Hampton Octet from 1961 shows Slide holding the exact model we’re talking about.
