Does anyone know what the “J Mandrel” refers to in the Edwards bass trombone bell options?

Conn style.. A bit tighter..

Thanks Tbarh. I figured such, but Edwards has such a strange labeling system for their bells. I never understood why rose brass is not available in certain gauges for bass trombone.

I played one once. Smaller bell throat, even more so than most "bright" bass trombone bells. I didn't personally care for it.

Not all material is available is sizes suitable for all needs. Gold brass sheet especially can be tricky to find., Not only in specific thickness, but also in size.

Yes Matthew, makes sense. The 22 and 23 gauge rose brass are used for an assortment of 8.5 inch large bore tenor bells in the Edwards line. However, their bass bells are mostly yellow and red brass. It could be that the extra inch makes a huge difference in sheet metal availability. I imagine that the folks at Edwards have also done extensive testing and possibly found little need for an “alloy in the middle.”

I also see a lot of people selling Edwards bells her with no info except the Edwards code (which i dont find any logic in)
