Was starting to save and research for my first bass trombone and was curious about the Conn 62HI. I currently play a modern 88HO for my large tenor and wondered how similar they are. I like my general sound and playing on the 88HO and the 62HI seemed like a good place to start.

I have both an Elkhart 88H and a 62HI from the 90's. Both are terrific instruments and the Conn DNA is obvious as soon as you begin to play. Once, as an experiment, I put a 1G bass mouthpiece into the 88H. It was amazingly "punchy" in all registers and solid sounding as well. I'd even consider using it as a bass if I didn't already own several basses. Give it a try ---- you might be amazed, too !

I play a 62h for my bass work, and it's pretty perfect for most of my NYC work - enough front to sound good on a close mic, and enough body of sound to fit in with an orchestra.

I find that I don’t necessarily like instruments that are similar “on paper”. I happen to have a setup now between small tenor, medium tenor, and bass that are similarish in port but I’ve at various times played Mixes of all varieties. You might be surprised. I’d keep an open mind and try a bunch out.

Chris Jones on, I believe, a 62HI with either a 2G or 1 and 1/2G mpc.

That's an Elkhart 62H. You can tell because of the traditional (I refuse to say closed) wrap, the dependent valve, and the tuning in the slide, given away by the extra brace in front of the player's hand. A good one of these may be out of the OP's budget fwiw.

OP, you could also consider the Jupiter/XO 1240 with the standard rotors, if possible, and any other basses available near you. Don't go too extreme on the mouthpiece, either; a Bach 2G or 1½G (or equivalent [insert brand here]) will be sufficient to test the horns with.

Yeh that's a dependent instrument in the video. How could that be mistaken for a 62HI????

If you are able to try one I would. The XO dependent mentioned by Kevbach33 is a very heavy instrument and the balance in your hand is poor.

If you look at Christian Jones' youtube channel you will see a lot of videos of him playing on a modern 62HI.

Because I’ve read where Mr. Jones plays a 62HI (he says keeps one at home, one at work), and observed him doing so on videos, but failed to note in this particular video, which is not very clear when played on my phone, he was using a dependent horn which someone identified as an Elkhart 62.

Tough crowd.

The Conn 112H may be a good alternative to a 62HI, and probably be a lot less expensive. Especially as a first Bass.
