Making progress on this! Shoutout to Crazy4Tbone86 for fantastic work on this custom slide and for Burgerbob for recommending the 607F a few months ago.

Backstory to this is that almost 10 years ago, I picked up a Shires T0825GLW slide that I had paired with a Tru-bore and a Bach 36 bell. Worked great, but it lacked a little bit of what I'd want to use it for in all settings, like lead in particular. Along the journey... I had a 500/508 3BF.. Shires T08LW/1YM before settling on a YSL356 for a few years. 356 was really close, but had a similar issue to the T0825GLW I had. Just a little too big but generally pretty good for me. I feel like if the Shires would have been yellow tubes or maybe even nickel... I'd possibly have not cycled through all those other instruments.

Has a King 606 upper inner/outer, original King 607F lower, with an M/K drawing nickel Olds .515 crook. Bell is still the original 607F but I'm having another bell section made with a Getzen 3508Y and I'll see which I like best and stick with it.

Tried out a bunch of .500 leadpipes that Crazy4Tbone86 had in stock. Lots of really cool options, mostly "stock" pipes with a few variations on "stock" pipes, but it covered the entire range of what I think you could want. Really open pipes, really centered pipes, stuff in the middle, etc. I ended up settling on one that I had acquired a while ago, a King 2B+ pipe that he prepped for me.

At any rate, the work is superb and while in the honeymoon period, but I think I've got what I'm looking for... finally. It can handle every type of commercial playing I'd ever do... every chair in the big band and solo work. Probably going to be selling off all the other small bore stuff I had acquired over the years! I can totally endorse his work!

Pictures to follow later today!

Interesting. I'm currently having a 356 crook put on a 32h, to widen the slide a little. The 32h wasn't a collector, and the original crook had a patch on it, so it might have seen a tough life. I didn't feel bad about carving it up a little. I think I'll be happy with this without a valve, but we'll see.

@MattK, curious why you didn't go with a dual bore crook that fit the slide bores a little more precisely, like the 356?

Almost gave my 608 a trial by fire at work yesterday, but with the new leadpipe setup it's too long :( gotta have the tuning slide cut down.

The M/K crook I got is a copy of an Olds Recording. I misremembered the bore size. I was thinking of the ID of the slide, which for that one is a .495/.515. The ID of the crook is .545: https://www.mkdrawing.com/product/tromb ... mall-bore/. If I recall correctly, this is the same ID of the King 607F crook as well. I also wanted something nickel to complement the outers. So given that the crook was intended for a sort-of similar dual-bore slide, matched the 607F, and was the right material... seemed like it would have a pretty good shot at being what I was after!

The 356 crook afaik only comes in yellow brass, or else I probably would have considered it more strongly!

Interesing about the intonation. My leadpipe collar looks really similar to yours but mine worked with a tuner yesterday. I haven't played with drones or anything else. I'm wondering if I have more of an intonation problem than I'm thinking... hm... will have to try that out tonight

Excellent! I picked up a cheap 607 also after seeing Burgerbob's and other's comments on this horn, and have been curious about this project since you mentioned it a previous thread. Looking forward to seeing how it turned out!

My (formerly Burgerbob's) 607 has a Shires 2 .525 pipe waiting to go in, and it may also be getting the double valve treatment at some point. But even stock it's a winner!

Glad that #2 pipe found a good home :D

Figuring out the bell section first. Having Brian make me another (straight/modular) bell section with the 3508 bell. Depending on what I like more… we’ll see what other crazy project I can come up with for this! I was playing on it today and floored at how good the F side is. Would be a fabulous candidate for a 2nd… hmmmm

Yeah, once I got the 607 it made me reconsider doing the 2-valve 3B first. Its low register is absurd for its size!
