A tab for new member introductions for vetting people would be nice. As a new member I don’t have anything to post about at this time, but I’d like to be vetted.

I play trombone & tuba in Roux Carré jazz band, 2nd trombone in the Civic Orchestra of Baton Rouge, and tuba in the COBR Brass Quintet. My next adventure is learning E♭ tuba. And also getting my soon to be 4 yo a pBone mini alto trombone and seeing what I can teach him. My low brass professor said you should start kids out on an alto trombone. I’ll start him with ear training and teach him how to read music when he gets older. I also have 13 & 14 yo daughters that play oboe and horn.

My main instrument is tuba, but played bass trombone my junior year in high school some 24 years ago. I’ve been playing trombone again for a year now and it’s coming back quite well.

I started college as a music major, but switched to engineering. I have a B.S. in Engineering with a Minor in Music, and M.S. in Engineering. I’m a Telecommunications RF Engineer and that minor in music helped me get that job.

I am a college trombonist; 2nd year BM at Indiana University. My primary equipment is a Bach 42A, Conn 88h Elkhart, and a Yamaha 671 Alto. I occasionally doodle around on euphonium, but I don't currently have one.

I've just joined this forum today. I studied trombone seriously in college and, for a time, playing made me a decent living...then, well, life. I'm consistently practicing again and am here to learn and be inspired.

I play a nice "Corporation" Bach 16 and am interested in acquiring (or building) a convertible Bach 36.

Since I've just joined today.....

My experience has been all jazz/blues/pop related. After finishing my degree and teacher's certificate I worked 42 years with school bands. I preferred the first year students as they had no bad habits yet! Chose to leave the job when the pandemic hit - no fun trying to teach beginners through a computer screen. Coming here for general info on horns and thinking I need to downsize my collection. Got rid of all the student level horns of every instrument type I had gathered over the years but wanting to fix up and or simply sell many of my remaining trombones. I've discovered it's difficult to play more than one at a time!

Looks like a very comprehensive site!

Just up late looking at new horns and thought I'd drop by and say hello. Went to music school for a year and then joined the air force. Now I play with the Heartland winds and make ensembles by myself for fun.

I've been playing on a Bach 42b for 25 years with a Warburton mouthpiece.

Long time lurker, first time poster, I've been playing trombone for nearly 25 years, mainly in a wind/marching band. From time to time I also play other older tenor valve instruments in brass sextets, and a tuba because who doesn't want to play the tuba?

i played sousaphone one year in marching band...a diversion i guess...what the director needed at the time

Didn’t have an urge to play tuba until about 20 years ago, it was the only option for a Christmas brass ensemble. (Long story, basically BBb only tuba available, I was only valved instrument player that could read bass clef.) 3 day crash course self-taught worked out ok. Euph was my primary instrument at the time, basically just had to learn reading the low notes. I was hooked. Have an old Conn 20J now, typically in storage until Christmas time. Wouldn’t want to play weekly, but annually it’s a fun change from trumpet and trombone.

I’ve been here for a little bit but as many have said, I haven’t had much to post about and would love to get vetted so I can see pictures on posts and all that.

I’m a trombone/tuba player and band director in Minnesota. Got my undergrad in music education at the University of Minnesota Duluth and got a masters in trombone performance at University of Missouri Columbia. I currently play on a “Custom S” (Presently Lake City) alto trombone, Conn 6H, Conn 88HO, and an Edwards B-502I and borrow a Kanstul Contra from one of the local high schools for tuba gigs. I play on pretty much all Hammond mouthpieces, JF2A, 13M, 11MXL, and 21BXL. Currently play on a Conn Helleberg tuba mouthpiece but after seeing the new Hammond line of tuba mouthpieces looking at getting into those.

Finally found my way over here. I started bone in 1969. Around 1972, I got my Conn 48H Constellation and that's been my workhorse since. Along the way, my grandfather gave me his old Eb tuba he had played in his "oompah" band. It is a York Monster Eb tuba with Hi pitch & Lo pitch slides, built around 1910. Had the slides unstuck (he felt he didn't need to tune!), taught myself to play and formed the "Jolly Coppersmiths" in high school (a really poor polka band - but we had fun and had some real gigs!) I still fiddle around on that but don't have many opportunities to really play it.

Today, I play a Getzen Eterna II 747 large bore tenor in the Bend in the River Big Band (formed by alumni of my college over 30 years ago) and I use my 48H for 1st trombone in what was formerly the 3M Symphony Orchestra (yes, that 3M Company) which is now the East Metro Symphony Orchestra - a non-profit group. I usually use the 48H for anything else that comes up.

In the stable, I also have a Chinese alto, a student line flute (I don't play), an F.E. Olds Studio model trumpet (I also don't play), and another very old horn, a Holton Revelation trombone which also has Hi pitch and Lo pitch tuning slides and a friction fit slide. It's rough, but it is playable.

I started bass trombone in 2012 in my highschool big band jazz ensemble on an old independent benge horn, then played on a vincent bach 50B2 until I graduated. When I went off to college I got a silver plated single thayer F attachment vincent bach 50 that I now play in the Salt Lake Symphonic Winds. I started on a bach 1 1/2 g and found out pretty quick my tuba lips preferred a 1g and I've been happy on that ever since.

Hi all! I've been lurking on the forums for a while now, finally trying to get posts in for vetting.

I played trombone from about 2007 - 2018, picking up bass trombone around 2010 and using it throughout high school and college, including during marching band. Now that I have a stable job, I'm looking to get back into playing in local bands and upgrade from my cheaper knockoff horns to something more substantial.

I'm a new member, and I need a 3rd post before I can use the search function.

I live in Phoenix, Arizona. I'm a retired engineer, and since retirement, I've finally started working harder at improving my trombone skills. I play in both a community college concert band and a community college big band.

Here's my third post on the forums. I'm an enthusiastic amateur rather than professional musician. I've been playing in a "street band" with college friends for the last 3+ decades, along with various other smaller groups, community bands, and 1-off horn sections. I'm not known for nimble playing or gorgeous tone; I get called when the assignment is to play really loud and really high for an hour or two. Some recent repetitive stress tendinopathy in my left elbow has me looking for a lighter daily player than the Benge 190F that has been my only horn for close to 25 years.

I am trying to attain three posts in order to gain full access to the wonders of trombonechat, so apologies for my rambling...

I used to play orchestrally, until about 14 years ago, when I left to focus on teaching full time...I still get the odd gig when people get desperate enough. I have recently decided to start (restart) doing a masters in trombone, and look forward to seeing what I can learn from the chat regarding repertoire for recitals and such.

I'm also trying to attain the magic three posts. I'm not the trombonist, but my son (grade 9) is *really* into it. He's been playing a nasty Yamaha student trombone for the past 4 years. The other day I told him what I paid for it (I think it was $80), and now he suddenly realizes that "my trombone is crap!" So I'm on the hunt for a new trombone! I want to buy used and I love the idea of buying one from a pro on trombonechat!

I played trombone in my school days before switching to tuba partway through high school because it seemed like it would be less work. I hadn't touched a horn since 2007 up until a couple weeks ago when I impulse-bought a used Cool Wind trombone because why not?

I'd always thought it would be fun to have a tuba at home to noodle around on, but tubas are expensive. I figured a cheap trombone run through an octave pedal, though, might just scratch that itch. I've been playing around a bit with a minimum cost/effort electric trombone setup, but that's a topic for another thread, methinks.

Anyways, looking forward to pestering you lot with my harebrained schemes and general lack of talent.

Hello! I've been lurking a bit here. But I joined TTF over two decades ago when I still in high school! Even though I got an engineering degree and working in tech since college, I never stopped playing through college and well into adulthood and now, where I play in many community ensembles. I'll play until I can't anymore, and I'm glad this forum is still around in some way.

I've spent the last few years lurking via account-less viewing. I started playing trombone back in 2001 until about the end of 2008-09 timeframe. Ended up joining the Navy and became heavily invested in the tech and cybersecurity realm, but I've always made sure to keep my King DG Bassbone with me. My oldest daughter just started band this year and decided that she wanted to follow in her daddy's footsteps and play trombone. So we just picked up a Yamaha YSL-354 for her. The spark has been reignited for me seeing how excited she is to learn.

I'm a high school senior that loves the long funny piece of tube I chose to play since fifth grade. I believe that trombone is the best instrument because yes.

I enjoy playing in my jazz band and concert band and will be section leaders for both this year.

I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can to improve before my high school career reaches the double barline.

Hi all, thanks for creating this new members introduction area. I used to read the forums when I was in middle school and early high school. I studied at Vanderbilt, and Yale and am now a freelancer in Annapolis/Baltimore, MD.
Which means I work a day job and play whatever gigs I can!

I play:
Shires with dependent rotors, bass trombone
Shires Trubore, large tenor
King 4B, my practice axe for tenor
Martin (I think Committee?) circa 1920s, anything with swing and ledgers.


Glad to be back on the forum, though I have to admit the site is more difficult than I remember.

Hey all, I guess I'm what you'd call a "comeback" player. Majored in Trombone Performance in the late 80s at Cal State Northridge. Did road bands and cruise ships in my 20s, then dropped out of playing for a long time. Been working as an electric bassist in AZ for the last several years, and picked up my horn again this last year. Working on getting back in the game...have my first trombone gig in 25 years next week!

Lapsed low brass player here

I played trombone and tuba through undergrad and a couple years after. I moved across the country for a physics PhD in 2014 and never found a group to play with. I kept my tuba and trombone, but they sat idle for several years. I'm finally getting back into playing, hoping to join a community ensemble once I feel confident again.

I also mess around with modular synthesizers and live coding (max/msp, supercollider). If anyone else is in the overlap between brass and electronic music let me know! Would love to chat about how you bridge those interests.

Gregg here. I’ve played, with a few lapses, since 1990. I played in HS and college and a variety of community groups since my college years.

I’m now in eastern NC, have joined a community orchestra, and am working to get my chops back.

I’m glad to have found this group!

I've been a lurker here for a bit, played all through high school and college, and did the good 'ol Texas all-state stuff in high school in 2001,2002 and 2003. I dropped out of college after a year of Trombone Performance to tend to personal things back at home, picked the horn up a few times here and there but never long enough to really make a difference until about 3 months ago. I had some pretty bad health issues (blood clots that turned into pulmonary embolisms) and the specialist said doing things to help out my lungs would be beneficial, so I chose picking up the horn more often over adding more cardio to my routine. So far my lung function has improved a great deal and the Drs are all happy with my progress. I started playing in a few local community groups, my church orchestra, and a local paid orchestra so I'm keeping busy and just trying to really get my chops back. 20 years was a long time to be away but it seems things are coming back much quicker than I thought.

A thread for intros is a good idea—I wish I’d seen it before I posted one in the wrong place. So, here’s a second try…

I started on baritone in junior high school, half a century ago, and picked up trombone in high school. Went to music school in my early 20s, got a degree in jazz performance and played pretty intensively through the mid ’90s, then set the horn aside for a couple decades.

Started playing again about 8 years ago and that was a sobering lesson in being older and slower. But I’m back to maybe 75 or 80% and starting to play with some interesting and challenging bands. At the same time, it’s amazing how little I know about playing the trombone. Did I forget or just never know? I’m not sure. Thus my interest in this forum!
