Oooo, I'd love to hear that. I may have to plan a trip.

Be curious to hear that you think of it. I heard it last year at Suntory Hall, with Joe playing the solo.

Joe has seriously projecting sound, pretty much every note was crystal clear from my seat on the 2nd tier. He and the orchestra sounded awesome!
It's a very interesting piece with a lot of variety, but nothing too outlandish technically. According to the program notes some sections are improvised, but I suspect he had worked out what he was going to play - it was all very clean and nothing sounded obviously improvised.
One part of it, I think the 3rd movement called Hysteria (about the pandemic), had some wild angular lines and lots of interplay between the solo and sections of the orchestra. It was a very moderate tempo and I sort of wished it was faster to create more "Hysteria."
The last movement, Joe's Tango, is more rhythmically complex and gets into some higher and faster playing with some high F#'s and I think I heard one G. It ends on a high F#!
Overall an excellent addition to the repertoire.

I was blown away by Joe's playing when I heard it, but the actual composition wasn't my cup of tea. It had some really cool moments but just didn't feel as coherent as a piece as, say, the Bourgeois concerto.

Joe sounds like $4 million dollars (inflation adjusted) on his new Shires and Laskey combo.

I didn’t see this thread until now. I was there last Saturday, the 27th. Joe sounded amazing as always. I’m looking forward to the studio recording release with the UNLV Wind Symphony. I believe it’s slated for November.

The first piece on the program, Barber’s Symphony in One Movement, was something that I have never heard before. It’s now one of my favorite pieces. I found a great recording on my Tidal app, the Baltimore Symphony conducted by David Zinman, and I’ve been listening to it nearly every day now.

I just noticed online that Joe is playing it again this summer (in Vail, CO) w/the NYP again, in case any folks in the west want to get a chance to hear it live. I'm kind of tempted to go myself.

Great piece, great recording. Detroit also has a great recording of Barber #1 with Jarvi.

I'm very excited to hear it in it's entirety, and in all iterations, and I really can't wait to hear some other players tackle this piece. This seems like something Marshall would crush.

Was this a premier performance? Is there a video I could watch? I have loved Chick Corea forever.

Nah. It's been played in Japan, and I think premiered in Brazil.

The two videos I linked above have short sections of the concerto played by Alessi.

If you are a New York Philharmonic subscriber I believe there is on-line access to previous concerts.
