Full Scholarships available at the Glenn Gould School for the 2024/25 academic year.

The Glenn Gould School is the professional division of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada. We have a very unique program that is focussed on orchestral training at the highest level and we are happy to announce that we have spots available in the low brass studio for next year.

Some of the highlights of the GGS program are:

Full scholarships for students accepted into the program.

Small studio size. We only accept enough students to fill a symphony orchestra. For the low brass, this means three tenor trombones, one bass trombone, and one tuba.

“Orchestra Weeks” where we stop all classes and the orchestra schedule functions like a professional orchestra; two rehearsals each day, culminating in a concert at the end of the week. This allows us to bring in world class conductors for each concert. Repertoire this year includes: Also Sprach Zarathustra, Bolero, Mahler 5, Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis, and Tchaikovsky 5 (including a performance at Carnegie Hall). With such a small studio, it’s important to note that every student plays in every concert.

Lessons are 90 minutes in length, providing students with up to 50% more private lesson time than most schools.

We host up to 10 brass masterclasses each and every year. This year’s list of Masters includes: Jörgen van Rijen and Timothy Higgins on trombone, Aaron Tindall on tuba, Tage Larsen and Amy McCabe on trumpet, Michelle Baker and Peter Kurau on Horn, as well as a brass residency with Colin Williams on trombone.

We have a proven history of graduates winning jobs. Alumni of the GGS have held positions in the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, American Brass Quintet, Calgary Philharmonic, Edmonton Symphony, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, among others. Our focus is not just on winning auditions, but on understanding the role of the low brass in the orchestra.

We offer a Bachelor of Music degree as well as an Artist Diploma for those who have finished their undergrad or graduate degree and are looking for a program that is lighter on course work and heavier on performing.

In most years, we only have one or two spots open in the studio but, for the first time in the history of the program, we have four openings in the low brass class for the 2024/25 school year: two tenor trombones, one bass trombone, and one tuba.
