YBL-622 vs 620G

Post by joshwirt »

I know totally different horns but anyone with experience able to weigh in? I’m looking into both as an option as a double (I’m primarily a tuba player who used to play a 1052FDR).

I’m not fussed about dependent vs independent…I’ve always played independent but frankly didn’t utilize the options as much as one might.

Thanks!!

I tried the 822 and 620G back to back in the LMS a couple of years ago. Very different horns I thought. I preferred and bought the 620. More responsive and a bit darker.

What kind of playing are you going to be doing? I think the 620G is a bit better at being an "all around" bass. It is somewhat based on the older 611/612 series, which were good horns.

The 622G is an orchestral horn, through and through.

I’ve owned an 822g and 620g, they’re on different ends of the spectrum, but I liked how solid the 822g was, much bigger and broader at volume, and I liked how nimble and colourful the 620g was, a nice commercial horn with a wider colour spectrum.

I second this also. 620 is much lighter and can be considered "original Yamaha"-style horn, catering to typical Japanese band's lighter sound, continuing the lineage of 611 and 612. The 822 is definitely American-style orchestral horn, with much heavier sound.
