I would like to know according to your experiences if there is a mouthpiece that goes better with the Yamaha YSL 891 Z Trombone. THANK YOU

It's a matter of YOU as well as the horn. You can play anything from (using Bach sizes) a 4C to a 15C. Some will work better for you. If you are upgrading from a student horn, start with your current mouthpiece and find out where its limitations are.

I just picked up an 891. For the very short time I’ve had it, my Griego 6.5 NY is working well. I haven’t been able to spend time with anything else just yet. Like Bruce said, there are variables; the horn, which leadpipe is in it, musical setting, and mouthpieces that work for you. The good thing is the 891, like “most” Yamaha horns, isn’t very mouthpiece-dependent.

For some examples: Wycliffe Gordon, Michael Dease play custom Pickett pieces on theirs. Andy Martin plays something else (no idea what). And in other forum posts RJ Mason talks about using a Greg Black with his.

No, there is no "better" mouthpiece for a Yamaha 891Z. Mouthpiece choice is a very individual matter - someone else's favorite may not work for you. And what works for some repertoire / musical styles may not be best for others. Unfortunately, you'll probably have to start experimenting. I could give the my three favorites to start the experiment, but they are probably not the ones favored by other experienced trombonists.

You should probably start with one of the more popular (middle-of-the-road) choices and work out (gradually and systematically) from there. The Yamaha SL-45C2S piece that is supplied with the 891Z may be a good starting point. See mouthpiece catalogs from Yamaha, Marcinkiewicz, Bach, Schilke, Denis Wick, etc. for ideas. Or learn about Doug Elliott's 3-part mouthpiece system.

In the meantime, thanks to everyone for the replies... at the moment I'm using a Bach 6/2 al with the NY leadpipe and always a Bach 6/2 "corporation" (which initially had a wide stem that I had cut and adapted to a small stem many years ago when I also had the Bach model 42) and this with the A leadpipe seems to work better in the sense that the trombone seems more open and sounds better.
I have already tried: Shilke 50, Denis Wick 10, Denis Wick 9BS and the one supplied with the tool but they don't work for me..
The Shilke 50 for example, even with good support, is too large and not adequate...
I would like to try/testing a Marcinkiewicz like the 7G or something that still has a size (support) s of a 6/2 bach which I realized is a size I'm comfortable with me. Sorry for my english

I tried a Marcinkiewicz 8H and found it very similar to a Bach 6½AL. Unfortunately that wasn't the size I was looking for.

You might want to look at a Bach 7C -- close to the 6½AL in diameter but shallower. Another option might be the Bach 6¾C which has many followers.

Doug Elliot LT100/D/D3 or E/E3 is a great combo for this horn.

I would try the Schilke 47B (skeletonized blank), and the Stork T2 first. 7C rim size, roughly...
Good and easy high range, without impairing the low range too much.
Then, an old Conn 3 could be a good match as well, larger throat, more breath to the sound, but they are not very consistent from mpc to mpc...

You can use whatever mouthpiece you want, as long as you're comfortable on it and you like the sound. This is the case for any trombone you play.

There's no definitive 'best' mouthpiece - I don't have an 891Z but I've had good results with trying well-liked sizes and working from there. 6.5ALS, 6.75C, 7C, 11C, 12C are all reasonable choices as are their Denis Wick, Schilke, and Yamaha equivalents.

Yes, but as a starting point you try to use a mouthpiece that is an average for that size of trombone and worked well for many other musicians...
Better to say that this axe is like a King 3B, and, depending the music to be played on, can use roughly the same mouthpieces you would play with a King 3B...
