What is going on with the tone changes here using the valve?

The F crook has been removed, so you’re hearing the sound go through the first leg of the F attachment. There are several other modern pieces that call for this effect.

Sounds like it's probably just half out cause of the pitch matching. If you take out just the "out" side you can tune it to match pitch when valve is engaged and disengaged.

Cool, I'll have to play with that idea myself.

Thanks!

I love Abbie's playing. She has so much feeling inside of her sound, and you can connect with her emotion and intent. Wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

Abbie was a classmate of mine. I wish I had the opportunity to play with her more in those years. There were 4 orchestras at Juilliard, and we were never in the same one, although I did sub for her once. We all knew that she was a great player, but as good as I thought she was, it was an eye opening when her recordings started to come out. A complete player and a complete musician! She's a nice person too - she was a fun person to hang with in the school cafeteria over lunch or a coffee. So glad to see all of her success as a soloist!
