I currently have a Conn Remington mouthpiece, and would like a second as a backup. I am not sure where to find these with the appropriate size for my trombone (an 88H). I have a mouthpiece adapter that can make smaller mouthpieces fit into my trombone,and would like a recommendation for a mouthpiece to use with the adapter.
Any ideas?

First, Remington shank Remington mouthpieces are pretty common on the used market. That would be the best choice if you like playing the Remington.

If you want something that fits your adapter, there was a small shank Remington sold with (among others) the Connstellation line of trombones (24H, 48H). It's the same cup but on a standard small shank.

If you want to try a different size mouthpiece, older Schilke mouthpieces came with a longer shank that fit the Conn large shank as well as the Bach large shank. The 51 should be close to the size of the Remington. Bach used to make "Remington shank" mouthpieces on special order. A popular size bought by 88H players was the 5G-R (the R stands for Remington shank). 5G-R mouthpieces show up from time to time on the used market.

Doug Elliott will make a Remington shank for any of his mouthpieces. An Elliott set will be much more expensive than a 1 piece (if you can find it) but Doug makes great mouthpieces. A short conversation with him would make choosing the best combination of parts really easy.

Bruce is right. Large-shank "Remington" mouthpieces are readily available used. (Check eBay.) If you like yours, get another one.

If you want a better mouthpiece (in my opinion) get an older "long-shank" Schilke 51 which will fit your 88H receiver.
Or, as Bruce says, get a Doug Elliott setup that will match your needs. (I'm very happy with mine.)

I recommend against using a small-shank mouthpiece with the adapter. It will never sound as good as using a large-shank piece that fits the 88H receiver.

Did they even make "Remington" adapters? I suspect the adapter is really for a standard "Morse" large shank. Which fits, more or less, into an 88H.

Yes. My 88H (1972) came with adapter to use a standard small shank mouthpiece. I quickly learned that this was a bad idea.

yes they do my 1964 Elkhart series came with an adapter that came with the original instrument

I believe I have a Remington mouthpiece sitting in my spares box, if you want that as a backup.
