I love to play Easter music at our church as i did today, good music , good musicians who are great friends and it's very inspiring. But there's no concept of how long a trombone can get, that's why I use my 62h.

Okay. So it's hard for me to tell what is in front of you and to the left. BUT if it belongs to the guy in front of you he has a few etiquette lessons to learn regarding working with others.

It's amazing how often trombones get the least amount of physical space of any instrument in tight stage setups.

On the other hand, this usually happens if I'm not early. If I have a chance to be a little proactive and talk with others about the stage setup, we can usually find a good accommodation for shared space.

Looks like a great time to use a flugabone.

I only have disdain for anyone who "nests" around their chair, especially if a green room, dressing room and/or backstage space is provided. In rehearsals it's bad enough, in concert it's inexcusable.

If that's my gig, the musician in front of me is in danger of accidentally getting a slide in the back, because where else are ya gonna put it?

Certainly an awkward situation. At least some remediation is physically possible .

Church pews and choir benches are immovable objects.

When I was at U of North Texas the trombone choir went out and did a Sunday morning gig at a church and we were seated... in the choir loft. Terrible sight lines to the conductor, terrible ergonomics for fitting in stands and slides.

The performance was pretty much a misfire from start to finish..


I recall reading that the double-slide tenor trombone was created for crowded opera orchestra pits. Does anyone make those today?

The distance requirements during the pandemic were a godsend for slide room. Never had it so good!

When I get to a venue, this is one of the first things I check, and yeah, some times people don't even think when they set up chairs and stands. I have almost always been able to come to a better solution either by simply asking or by taking matters into my own hands. If they want you to play, they have to provide a space for you to do that. Sometimes I sit in the front row, or an aisle, or I move some percussion equipment.
