Diy slide Shipping box

Post by Xcomunic8d »

Hey all I just put this box together to ship my slide out. Thought somebody might need inspiration or plans.

I have plans for free for this. Cost me about $20 to make. But I have lots of lumber laying around.
Should be able to make it from 1 2’x4’ 3/4” piece of plywood at a big box store. Note the tape measurements in pics below
1” foam in a roll from Walmart or store of your choice (hobby lobby etc).

I put rabbets 3/4” wide by 1/4” deep on 3 of 4 sides of base.
Note: pocket holes would eliminate rabbets and save lots of time. Eliminate next step if pocket holes.
Pre drill holes from the rabbet side then clamp the sides on and redrill and countersink (use glue). Repeat for 3 sides

I put a dado 3” up from the base. Due to 3 layers of 1” foam.
I used spray glue for the bottom piece of foam.
Double sided tape may work.
Lay your slide out on middle piece. Mark with Milwaukee marker. Cut out with knife or scissors.
Put 2nd layer in as friction fit only. (I glued mine in- don’t do this)
Put third layer in friction fit only.

Put your name and address on top with pics of how to open.
Any questions post or dm me.

That' s well made!

As of late, I've just been shipping components packed well in bubble wrap without a case or box, just to keep the weight down, since shipping costs have gotten more and more ridiculous over time, I swear the mass of a heavy case is itself a cause of horn damage while shipping, send out a bell section today, only bubble-wrapped in the box, and will send out 3 slides for re-alignment, also just bubble wrapped, and immobilized in the box.

Anyone ever have a slide damaged in transit?

I’ve been lucky so far, no damage. I’ve been shipping the way you have described for some time now. When I ship with the instrument in the case, I tend to add some bubble wrap between the bell, tuning slide, and both slide ends and the case edge to add a buffer. Also put some between the bell and slide. I’m paranoid though…don’t want to send something off and then have it damaged when it arrives!

To the OP, thanks much for the description. I’m looking into making a slide case for an extra slide. I may scale these plans down a bit, but it seems to serve for an excellent starting point for a case.

I spent a decade in secure logistics. Things that were in heavy boxes but not secured internally didn’t do well. In addition, heavy things loose in flimsy boxes didn’t do well either. You need a sturdy box and secure internally didn’t packaging. Granted I overbuilt this but everything gets beat up here pretty badly. You could scale down to 2” of foam internally or even 1”. 1” a bit small in my opinion.

I have a woodworking side business and made it as someone who has these things.
As I said pocket holes some and some shorter supports to screw into would make it much easier.

You don’t need the pull out version. You could easily make it a screw down lid. I plan to use this box over and over to ship my slides between the islands or to the mainland.

I’ve toyed with just putting a couple of screws into the handle portion marking them and shipping the box as is but think I’ll wrap it in bubble wrap and put in a cardboard box. I couldn’t live with myself if something happens to one of my horns.
