Make no mistake about it- I am a Conn fanatic. I grew up on a 1966 Conn 88H Trombone that I still own and treasure. While I have played Edwards Shires and Rath custom trombones in more recent years, they have all been based on the famous Elkhart Conns.

This is the slightly smaller brother to my 88H and a trombone designed to better fit the jazz scene while maintaining the ability to play the upper parts in symphonic or classical settings. It  has the lively overtones that it seems you only get from the Elkhart horns. I call it sizzle. You can feel the vibrations through your mouth face and left arm. The slightly smaller bore and bell make it a bit easier to play into the very upper range but still popping the pedal tones. Yellow bell adds a bit of brilliance, especially when you really put the air to it. You can slow the air and make it a warm dark ballad sound.

This one came to me in really good shape. The inner slide tubes do not have the "Connitis" wear frequently found on the early to mid 60's trombones. They are intact. It had a couple small dents and dings which I had professionally removed. Biggest issue was some contact wear of the lacquer and some fine scratching on the outer bell throat. We decided that a 79H this nice deserved to be at its best, so old lacquer on the slide contact points and on the bell itself were carefully removed and the areas were refinished with a clear shiny lacquer and then finished with heat. What you get is a trombone that looks as nicely as it plays. Slide was cleaned and aligned and is now fast free smooth and quiet.- What you want a slide to be.

One interesting note: The trigger "bar" where the thumb depresses is not original - It is substantially taller than the factory piece. I have no idea why or who but the lever bar has been either replaced or customized. Works great! If you know who or what might have been done, please let me know.

Comes in original case in great shape- latches and springs work well. Also original Conn 3 mouthpiece. Will be good starting point but I am a fan of a bit larger mouthpieces on the smaller trombones- I very much liked a 6 1/2 AL piece I tried and play with my jazz trombones.

1965 was about the peak of the Elkhart era. This is a superb trombone that plays and looks equally well. These are quite rare- not a lot of them made. This one is about as good as they come

I will ship well packed to the lower 48 states for $60 and elsewhere by US Postal service for actual cost - Europe and Japan should expect to pay about $100 for shipping - Australia about $120

Forum price 1795 plus shipping noted above- Call mark at 253 241 0932 or message

Mark -

Conn was selling some horns with that trigger in the late 70's. Much too late for that to have been original to the horn you're selling, but I'm guessing that it was a replacement Conn part. There was a player in school with me that had an 88H with that valve setup - it might have had a different model number (89H?). I don't remember seeing too many others (maybe one other at a Giardinelli's).

Maybe the valve linkage needed to be replaced around the mid-to-late 70's and that was the part Conn provided.

I could've sworn you had this horn on eBay a few months ago too. Or do you just come across a lot of really nice old 79Hs?

This is a different one. Seems like trombones come in bunches- I wont see a particular model for several years and then find another back to back. These are rare. Both were not what they were supposed to be. The first was supposed to be an 88H - this one was labeled as a trumpet!
