Can anyone tell me what makes a Kanstul CR rotary valve different than other rotaries? Is there a place online that shows the insides of the valve so that I might be able to compare it to like a Rotax or Instrument Innovations etc. Is it just the size???

Anyone out there play a Kanstul regularly or in the past? Opinions? I'm wondering how their bronze outer slide holds up over time compared to nickel or if it's even an issue or how it compares in tone quality.

I play a Kanstul 1662i w/2 CRs. They are lighter because the rotor isn't hogged out of Solid bar stock. It's soldered together and hollow. They are set up to have either fast action with more force or light action with more travel at the paddle. Larger than standard rotors.

I haven't had any durability problems with my slide. Plenty of horns use the same material.

I go back and forth on my horn in general, but I think the rotors are one of the high points, and the slide is not.

I had John Sandhagen install Kanstul CR valves on my Bach 50B3 several years ago. They are basically two pieces of curved brass tubing held together by a round bracket in a back-to-back arrangement, like this: )(. The bracket holds the tubes together (kind of like an exoskeleton), and forms the rotor core.

It’s a different approach to a rotary valve than the Rotax or Instrument Innovations valves. Those two are basically improved rotary valves—they still have rotor cores like a conventional rotor, but they have redesigned the core to minimize deflection and distortion of the sound wave. Additionally, the Instrument Innovations has ball bearings to allow smooth movement.
