Use a metronome constantly, use those alternate positions OFTEN, and listen to as many renditions as you possibly can. There are a lot of interpretive differences, especially in the “jazz” sections.

Record and watch/listen to your playing ... especially in spots that at the limits of your comfort. I often will spot a technical issue in my face that sneaks in while I am otherwise concentrating on other items that are outside my comfort zone.

If you're going to perform it with piano, realize that the piano part is extremely difficult and requires a very competent player and a lot of practice time. I was supposed to perform it at a trombone workshop many years ago, but the accompanist had not been given the music in advance, and told me to forget it.
Make sure you listen to it with the accompaniment - when I first learned it, I found it needed different interpretation with the piano than I had imagined before I heard the interaction. I was young and inexperienced when I first played it.
