Hi all,
Of all the current manufactured single valve .462 bass bones, give me a top 5 list please. I can't afford a "boutique/custome" type horn. Thanks!

Buy one used and you can get some really great instruments.

The only one that I'm aware of in current production is the Bach 50B. But others probably know of more

I would assume he means 0.562". The only 0.462" "bass" trombone would be pitched in G with a handle on the slide.
Not too many singles now in production. I can only think of:
Bach 50B (not B2 or B3)
Conn 110H
There might be a Wessex Tubas also.
On the used market there would be a bunch of good candidates:
Bach 50B
Conn 71H, 72H
Holton 169, 185
Olds P22
Yamaha YBL 322
there is a Reynolds single (don't know the model)
Slightly smaller but probably serviceable:
Bach 45B
Conn 89HK
Holton 159
King 5B
Good luck finding something.

Dont forget George' s Kanstul - there must still be a few new ones left and there are second hand ones. Finest single valve trombone ever made!

As of this past Sunday (4/28), Kanstul still had one 1670 available.
Not sure if they're still in production, but there are still new YBL-421G's out there (in stock at WWBW).
WWBW also lists the 110H as being in stock and ready to ship

The Yamaha YBL-421G (0.563" bore) is a fine single-valve bass trombone - possibly available used for much less than the $4,000 list price. Very robust, good slide, good rotary valve.

I'm know that Edwards offers single valve (detachable) Bass valve sections, and I'm assuming that Shires and Rath do as well. You can also remove the 2nd Thayer valve from some of the earlier detachable valve sections on these horns and replace them with a short neckpiece that connects from the F valve to the tuning slide.

YBL-421G. I don’t quite understand why it is so expensive ($3000+) comparing to the top line horn like YBL-830 ($4500) price. In Japan the price is almost half of that of the 830, around $2500.
If you have more money, Yamaha also have the YBL-622 and -822G, which are dependent horns that can be converted to an essentially YBL-421G.

YBL- 421G is $2500 CDN according to L&M’s website. ~$1650 USD?
I wonder if they’d sell me the 421 bell section?

If I could select anything and I wanted a single bass, I'd get an Olds P22, S20, Holton 183, or a Conn 60h, 71h or 72h. I'd never buy something like that new. All the best horns of that genre are in the past, especially if you exclude boutique makes. Favorites probably the Olds P22 or the Holton 183 because of sound and playability. You can actually find either of these from time to time, unlike a Holton 169 or 185, which you may not see for sale for a long time. There are also King 5b and Conn 110h. That's the down side of buying used - availability.
For only slightly more money, you can get double valve horns, like some of the Olds, P24g, S22, Holton 180, 181, King 6b and variations of the Bach 50b. Yamahas can be decent horns, but they aren't on my list of favorites. The YBL421 and 321 are popular single Yamahas.
On eBay right now are 321, 421, 6b (duo gravis), 72h, 110h, 50b...

At a rehearsal tonight I asked the Bari player if he has seen a bari sax for sale without the Low A Key.
"Hell no," he said. "That is like seeing a bass trombone without 2 valves"
Showing my age, as a kid, both of those were very expensive options. Now normal.

Don't underestimate Yamahas. The YBL-421G is a really nice (single-valve) bass, built to modern standards, with an outstanding slide and rotor (very "playable"), and a nice sound, that you may not find on other, older trombones like those listed above. I agree that WWBW's price is too high for a new one; you may be able to get a good price on a used one. (Several now listed on eBay!)

+1 for the Yamaha 421 G . I have one and like most Yamahas it is well made with a good sound ( to my ears ).

I really like my 421G! I managed to pick one up that was supposedly a demo horn but when it arrived it looked like it had never been out of the box it was shipped from the factory in. I thought $1,700 was a steal for this horn. One thing that surprised me is it is lighter than my Courtois AC280BO! Of course, if you're looking for a 0.562 horn this one is a 0.563.

Yes, and as a bari sax player and as a bass trombonist I can confirm that there´s not a single low A bari that resonates as well as a low Bb bari, all other things being equal. Perhaps much in the same way that the extra mass of a double valve bass bone doesn´t always work in its favour compared to a single.

I think Holton still makes the TR183 - a very good horn.
But I have to ask... Why current production? Because you are only interested in buying a new horn?...

Maybe the OP should get a single valve for for his own reasons, and then get some spare brass tubes assembled to look like an E dependant that can be attached "as and when".
Everyones happy!!

No point in bring the 1 valve vs 2 valve discussion in to this thread op didn't ask for that and we already have a few threads about that.

Indeed, a highly affordable and very decent single valve bass is the John Packer Rath 233. No pull to E, but otherwise rather nice.

To be absolutely clear, I'm not suggesting a working second valve, but just a dummy to placate those who want/need to see a two valve bass tbn, even if the 2nd isn't required at that time. That is all.

Oh sorry I didn't catch that. That would be rather humorous if he did that.

I'd do it, but then I haven't owned a bass tbn since 1972..

Yamaha 822G. Dependent or single valve. Easily converts between the 2.
